The Grand Rapids, MI video
I saw a clip on it on the morning news today, where they interviewed the Mayor and towns people about how and why they made this video. It is rebuttal to a (Newsweek I think?) magazine ranking of the most dying US cities - and the citizens of Grand Rapids took exception to their city being on the list. If nothing else, the music is great - set to Don Mclean's American Pie.  Brandon and Shel live here - maybe you can add more info?? |

| I despise lists like that, worst city, most dying city, best country etc. But then again, I despise most media, so I am rather biased about any list that a media outlet might produce. Good for the people of Grand Rapids, showing that there is life there! And I enjoyed the song, too, although I am not sure how much Mady enjoyed my singing. |
 SO FREAKING TOTALLY AWESOME!! My son lived there before moving back to TC. He loved the city  We drive through each time we go to Bumble's derm appointments at MSU. How can you not smile while watching that video? Woohoo!Thanks for sharing it, Dawn! |

It was filmed in one complete take - no clips/edits. They said they got it on the 5th try!  The news coverage showed bits of them driving the truck they were filming off of, and the boom arms that pivoted as they drove. That was almost as interesting as watching the video itself! And the pyro technical explosions off the bridge is actually powdered non-dairy creamer.  All sorts of interesting stuff! |
| The transition to vertical, the helicopter went off nearly perfect!! A wayward arm on the left, but otherwise, great! Yes, it was obvious one take and well done. Powdered dairy creamer.......they did that on Myth Busters and had.......a......ah.....blast! Lots of giggles. |
| The problem with lists like this is that they go strictly by the numbers on a survey. And anyone who knows anything about surveys is that you can make a survey say whatever you want/need it to just by what you look at and what parts are released to the public. The folks assembling the lists never experience what they're judging. I've been to GR several times when I was driving a truck and it's an awesome city. As a truck driver, I was typically subject to some preconceived notions about drivers. Not in GR... Those are among the nicest folks one would ever dream of meeting. So to the list in question, I say BAAAAAAA!!! This video is amazing as is the city and it's citizens! What a production to make such a great short film! Vance |
I agree with Vance, Baa! I've been in GR since 1991, and it is a great town. I think it has only gotten better over the last decade—although some major employers have moved out, but others have come in to take their place. And it is exciting to watch the transition from a manufacturing city to one more focused on innovation and science. Of course, I'm still trying to figure out what Rob Bliss is ultimately after... a gig as mayor? But the video highlights a lot of the fun things about GR and showcases some local celebrities. Lots of support for the making of the video. And I could hear the pyrotechnics on the bridge from my office Of course Charlie boy would have been shaking under my desk had he been at work with me that day  Thanks for sharing that Dawn! |
That was great! Had to have been a lot of work and planning to get it done right. I love seeing strangers come together to make something good happen. Cities in Texas always get on the "fatest city" list. Dont know why???? Oh well guess I'll go get a hot fudge sundae and think about it!!!  |
