Mady brought back the WRONG little friend from the US

The whole plan was Mady was supposed to come home with a little puppy pal (ahem, Charm), but instead, she brought back a tick :(

We were cuddling with Mady in the hotel last night, and we found a bump, on closer inspection, it was a tick, and it was attached to her, it was horribly not having internet so we couldn't google or post frantic messages here for help. We did pull the tick off with tweezers, it was attached, there was a small bite mark and some blood :( We put some polysporin and then some purell... We're pretty sure she got the tick at a rest stop in southern Michigan. The area had a lot of rain this week, and we were hanging out in a very wet field with longish grass. We called the vet first thing this morning, she wasn't overly concerned :phew: but she will get tested for heartworm and lyme disease in 6 months. The vet said it was very unlikely, but yes, we will have this nagging worry all summer long

Mady was specially put on advantix because we were going to sheepiepalooza, she had her first dose last Monday. How big should our nagging worry be? I wish we kept the tick because the vet could have tested it directly.

I live in southern Michigan, and we have taken the ticks we find on the dogs to the vet. He wanted to see them. They are brown dog ticks. Our vet told us a couple of weeks ago that there out because of all of the rain this year. He also said not to worry, Lyme disease has only been reported in 2 counties on the west side of the state over by Lake Michigan. I know they are still disgusting, but hopefully that will make you feel a little better.
When our Mattie went to the groomer a few weeks ago she had alot of them on her. None attached. I felt like such a bad mommy.

Wish we would have known you were passing by our way Frankie and Mady could have could have played.

Hope this calms your worries a little.

Yesterday came up to me at the computer and plopped his paw on my thigh. Knowing I don't approve of that here, I looked at him and was about to speak when he glanced at his foot and back to me, "Look at my paw." There was a tick, somewhat engorged, one of of his toes. I plucked it off and immediately Jack wandered away.

Glad I could be of service.
Jack is one smart boy, he knew something was wrong.
Yuck I hate ticks! We had a bad year with them two summers ago. Treated the yard, house and dogs. We pulled numerous ticks off all of our dogs. But all were fine
I understand your concern. Poor Mady. How dare a bug get on that beautiful girl! Hopefully she will be fine.
Sorry to hear about Mady's hitchhiker...do we have to worry about ticks in Ontario?

We haven't encountered any ticks in Ontario, and Mady is at the dog park every day, at the sheep farm for herding weekly, and generally pretty active. The vet only gave her the Advantix because we were taking her down to Missouri. Though some people at the dog park have said they've had ticks on their dogs.
Sorry you had a tick--ick ick--I hate them   ! They have said that they will be bad here this year too. I usually don't use Frontline every month as I do worry about the long-term effects--but the vet has suggested monthly application from April-October this year.

After I read your post I did a thorough exam on both boys! Glad you caught it quick!
We have ticks a lot in Finland from about April to October. They're so disgusting!
The ticks get attached to dogs with long hair easily so we have to think about some medicine. Something like Frontline but "more effective" as Frontline kills the ticks when they are attached to the dog and I don't want to take dead ticks off either.
But we have a wide range of these products in Finland and I just have to try what's best for sheepie.
