We already have 1 dog (mutt) who is about to turn 5. she's in for a big surprise! Our current dog is crate trained and came to us crate trained (we got her when she was 6 months old from the Humane Society)...so I really need to do some research on how to crate train. Any other advice? We did get a raise food bowl (well, one that "grows" with the dog). Other than that...I don't know. LOL Thanks for any advice! Sheryl |

Welcome to our fuzzy sheepie corner of the web! Advice? GET SLEEP NOW! LOL Patience, patience patience. Nice to have you here, I'm looking forward to stories and puppy pics!!! PS There are mixed opinions on raised bowls; seems like they might contribute to bloat. Or not. |
I've read the mixed review. My breeder does not currently use the raised bowls, but she she is in favor of them. Sleep now. I'm training for the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, so I'm getting up early anyway....it'll just fit into my schedule. LOL |

You will be getting up early....multiple times! |

Here's one... |
Here she was last Friday! The Think Pink is because I'm doing the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in a few weeks (hence the pink hair as well!) |
Aw what a cutie patootie! Enjoy the puppy breath! |
She's very cute How are you all doing? |
We get her Friday afternoon...a bit nervous! I have't had a puppy in 15 years. Our 5 year old mix breed came to us at 6 months old..so she was already potty/crate trained. She did chew up a LOT, so I'm ready for that...just not ready for all the whining/crying over night stuff! |
That will be a tough face to resist! |
Welcome Sheryl! I'm new to the forum myself. I got my puppy Teddy at 9 weeks and he wasn't crate trained yet. He took to it well as I followed Cesar Millan's advice for introducing the puppy to the crate. I didn't just stuff him in the crate, shut the door and walk away. I lured him in with a piece of food and sat down in front of the crate blocking him from walking back out. I sat quietly and blocked the door with my arm if he tried to come out. I waited until he would sit or lay down and then close the door. I would wait by the crate and if he stayed calm I'd let him out. I did this several times before I would leave the room. If she starts whining or barking, shush her and wait until she's calm before opening the door or you'll reward unwanted behavior. I also didn't just let him come bolting out of the crate. I'd wait until he would be calm and then open the door. Then block again with my arm until he would be calm again and then say "okay" for him to come out. He learned this the very first day and it will be so nice not to have a big dog almost knock you down coming out of the crate. I keep my crate in the kitchen which is close to my backyard door. The first 2 nights home I had the crate in my bedroom facing my bed so he could see me for comfort. He only cried a few times and I just shushed him and he quieted down. The third night I put the crate in the hallway but he could still see me. By the fourth night, he was in the kitchen and didn't make a peep. Something else that might help the separation from her litter mates is a blanket or rug with their smell. I also put a clock on the crate for about a week. I also cut off the food and water 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. I hope these suggestions help. My Teddy is 5 months old now and doing great. Have fun and post lots of pictures! Cindy |
Thanks so much for the advice Cindy! I'm starting to get really nervous as we're less than 24 hours away! We have a dog already (have I said that) who is about to turn 5. I'm more worried about her and her reaction. She's been an only dog for a year! She didn't like it when our other dog (that died last May) walked by her crate, so we've put their crates where Cocoa Bean won't be walking by Raspberry's crate. We'll see how it goes. |
I hope it goes well with Raspberry and your new little baby. Good luck and post lots of pictures of Coco Bean! What a cute name! Cindy |
Welcome Sheryl. You guys will be getting your baby tomorrow! Where do you live? Do you have to go far to get her? |
Welcome Sheryl! Enjoy bringing your baby home tomorrow!! Can't wait to see pics! |
Congrats on your new family member...our Sheepie pup is 8 months old today and my advice to you is to savour every minute because they grow so quickly. I mean it, you will put that baby to bed and she will be bigger by morning...your kids will just love her (I think its a "her"") We hadn't had a pup that young for many years also and there were a few trying moments but as long as everyone is consistant with what is allowed or not allowed, you will have a beautiful addition to your family. I had to puppy train in Dec which is cold winter weather here, so June sounds much better. We will be anxously awaiting pictures. Nancy |
