Millie, my beardie would get hot spots, and when the hair would grow back, it was brown.. Now I have noticed that Pearl hair along her spine is turning black. And since we know she has arthitis down her spine, it would make sense that the hair would be turning darker. I am really worried she is in pain, and of course, these puppers don't show distress unless it is severe. Here is a picture of her back.... ((the hair is darker in person.)) Any thoughts?????? |

Nope, never heard of internal strees with the dermal/hair change. Interesting idea, though. We've had our share of black hair over booboos here. Eventually it all goes back to normal. Glacier is the exception. She hasn't grown hair over her lower back in several years, just a little fuzz. (yes, her thyroid is closely monitored) And in the area where the second cyst "party" was held, the skin is black but absolutely no hair, no fuzz, no wound hair. The area is also tender, I can not rub the area without her flintching. |
thanks Susan!!! I was wondering. Tonight, about an hour ago, Pearl was laying down and could not get up. I wanted to go help her, but, in the past, she balks when I try. So to prevent any injury I watched how she crawled over the the rug in order to get traction. She ended up getting herself up. So, I know that the spine and her legs are giving her some pain at this time. |
I have several in this condition though I pray it is mostly weakness and not pain. I find when they are having problems, if I stand with a foot behind the back feet, they can push against my foot to get themselves up. Their dignity is intact. ( yeah, Jack growls with any attempt to lift him. ) Rugs are great as are dog cushions. With Harry it is boosting him onto the bed. He'll dance until he knows I ready and then in one smooth movement he'll put his front paws up as at the same time I am boosting the rear. The time spent in a potentially painful position is a second or two. I don't know what we'll do when he can't get his front paws up........ |
I thought once summer came, the warmer weather, it would help her with her joints. But, it doesn't seem to be doing much for her. I am glad that this weekend is Sheepiepalooza. I plan on taking her for a while so she can get out and feel 'normal'..(I think they know when they begin to slow). After this event, I think we will be needing to go back to the vet to see what is going on. she is eating and voiding fine!..she is sleeping sooo much..and then with the recent episode....I don't know..... Thanks again for the support and information!!!! |

Thanks again for the support and information!!!! Val: I don't think the warm weather necessarily helps that much. The problem is the huge fluctuation we are having this spring going into summer. Several days of rain on & off, a couple of nice warm sunny days & huge storms sweeping thru the next day only to see the sun come out & things get steamy around 5PM! I know my arthritis is fine in the winter once it gets cold & STAYS cold. Going thru the same thing here with Isaac. Most days he manages decently. I am constantly listening to the weather channel so I know what to expect from him. The meds are helping but I know in the long run, if he is on them too long, it is not good for him. But at 13 years & 3 weeks I'll take quality over quantity, as we've said before. |
