When she had the OCD surgery on both shoulders at about 6 months old, the first vet xrayed the hips and said there was HD (as per radiologist and vet). The ortho specialist did an xray again and said to wait until after 2 years old. So we are taking her right to the specialist this Monday. Today she has not shown any signs of a problem. There are days she seems fine. Does it come and go? Her OCD did not show everyday either. I hope she does not have HD! The poor girl has been through enough! |

I haven't had a HD dog, so no actual input from me. But, I have taken care of humans who need/get hip and knee replacements.. and I know in the beginning they have good day and bad days...and if they wait long enough, they end up in constant pain. Then they come hobbling into the hospital... Best wishes to Gigi on Monday |
poor gigi please call if you need anything i know derby would limp some day and some not dreamer and duffy sendss her hugs and kisses gigi to the left and duffy |
I love that photo of them! Will let all know what the specialist says. I have all weekend to worry! |
off to sarasota but will be thinking of you all |
I think some days for dogs with hip dysplasia can be better than others. Panda doesn't really limp... she tends to shuffle more when walking. Hoping Gigi's appointment goes well. Try not to worry... I know, easier said than done. That's an adorable picture, Suzi!! |
HD pain can come and go depending on activity levels. If Gigi is real active and rough today, she very well could be sore tomorrow. Arthritis will also affect soreness levels. If she had HD at 6 months, she probably has scar tissue and arthritis by now. Two years old is very young and I encourage you to explore all options if the Dr. finds that Gigi does have HD. We found out that Oliver has severe HD in both rear hips when he was 8 months old. We went to 6 different vets looking for options. If the vet could not give me 3 viable options, we moved onto the next one. Oliver just turned 4 in February and he does not exhibit any visual signs of pain. We keep him "a little too thin", have him on glusoceamine/chondrotin/msm supplements, and he has a strict exercise routine. We were able to build his muscle with hydrotherapy and wean him off pain-pills. His HD Dr. told us that for every extra pound he carries it puts 4 extra pounds of pressure on each hip. to Gigi. Just remember there are options that will make her comforatable and let her live a nice life! |
Carol, I'm sorry to hear about GiGi's pain , hope all goes well on Monday, Dutch and I will be thinking of Gigi and you |
Gigi is a good weight - 66 pounds. The vet told me due to her OCD surgery that she should not carry too much weight. She takes Dasuquin w/MSM everyday. |

You are already strides ahead then! We are also looking into Adequin injections right now. HD vet helped with K-State's research on it; it's supposed to be a lot more effective then oral supplements. |
I hope it all goes well!! |
