The vet didn't think we would have ticks where we live, so he put us on a different kind of flea and heartworm prevention. Can she get sick from them? Lisa Frankie and Mattie |

Well, yes and no. Only some ticks carry erlichiosis, Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, but they are all nasty and can (at a minimum) cause infection. It's great they weren't attached; that means they almost certainly cannot cause disease. Finding 10 unattached ticks is very uncommon unless she had JUST been walked in an area where they jumped on. They do attach themselves pretty quickly, within a few hours. |
erlichiosis, Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.......make sure your vet does a blood work up on her for blood parasites........that could explain some of her pain. |
Muscle pain is a symptom of tick disease... I wonder if that could be why Mattie is panting, lying down more and crying when helped up. I'd have the vet rule out tick borne diseases. http://www.dogsandticks.com/dog_tick_di ... index.html I'm wondering if it's all the rain we've had here in Michigan. We found 2 dog ticks recently... Bumble had one on his head (attached but still small)... we've never had a problem here before. I imagine we'll be running SNAP tests again this fall. We use Revolution... it's supposed to control the American Dog Tick but not others. Sigh. |
If they weren't embedded in the skin, I would not worry. We have a HUGE tick problem here on LI...I used Advantrix...works on ticks and mosquitoes which are also a big problem here. Advantage is for ticks only. Advantrix is for ticks and mosquitoes..Never had a problem..I also make sure I run my hands all over them when they come in from outside to fel for anything that might be "lingering" on the fur...another reason I like a shorty haircut at this time of year! |
UGH!!! Just this week, I started seeing the American Dog Tick (aka Brown Tick) in its nymph stage. There was one crawling up the wall in our laundry room. Depending upon the weather, they have shown up from March through May, and are noticeable for a couple of weeks. We have used Frontline Plus for years, with great success. Usually I find the ticks sitting on top of the dog's fur, dazed and confused...... I think Jaci may be on to something as far as Mattie's recent illness. You could also be exposed to tick-borne diseases, especially if your dogs sleep in your bed or get up on your furniture. Laurie and Oscar |
I'm with Jaci on this one. Definately have Mattie tested for Lyme's Disease. Her syptoms from your other post sound familiar with what I've heard and read about Lyme's Disease. |
I posted "muscle" pain but I think it's the joints become painful. |
Frontline Plus works really well too. Hope she is ok. |
"Dog ticks " or brown ticks are horrible here in Maryland this year. We have found 2-3 unattached or barely attached to Chauncey, however his upright 34 year-old brother has found several..........can I treat him with Frontline too??? |
