Heart Worm Medication

Which heart worm medication do you recommend for my pup? He has been tested. How soon should I start? I would also like to know which flea and tick medication is recommended.

We do interceptor. Works like a charm - Bingley likes it, and it is as safe as medication ever is!
We use Heartgard for heartworms and a few other worms too And Advantix for flea and tick protection. All our family dogs are on these without problems. As with any new medication, be alert for adverse reactions. Like humans, some dogs do not tolerate certain meds.
I have used Interceptor for Heartworm & Frontline for fleas & ticks for over a decade now. I give the Interceptor on the 1st of the month & apply the Frontline on the 15th.
Start heartworm immediately (as long as your vet says its okay that is). We give interceptor here as I *think* it protects against one additional nasty that Heartguard doesn't protect against. My vet has a jar of heatworms in his office...I shudder just thinking of those in one of my babies.

Forgot to mention dates. In Ohio, I start heartworm on May 1st & Frontline on May 15th. I continue thru November & we watch December temps. If it is still mild, we give a dose in December. Most of the time we are done in November. Some vets are keeping dogs on Heartworm meds year-round now. Another thing. If using a topical for fleas & ticks, read the instructions on when to apply. With Frontline, you need to wait at least 48 hours after bathing to apply so the natural oils in the skin can help transport the product. If the 15th falls around the time of a bath, I alter my dates by that 48 hours before & after. We used to do Frontline bi-monthly. But starting in 2010 we do it monthly as the fleas & ticks are getting more resilient.
I give Interceptor for Heartworm and Frontline Plus for Ticks/fleas/mosquitos etc.
I had used this with my other OES, and now with my puppy.
Never a problem.
Heartgard and Frontline Plus. We don't have a flea problem here in the valley but we do have ticks!!!

Contact your vet, it is important to start protecting your pup as soon as it is safe.
Thank you for the information.
