Keys Manufacturing Company, Inc. Recalls Pig Ears for Pet Treats Because Of Possible Salmonella Health Risk "...One illness to a dog in Missouri has been reported to date..." Someone asked the other day as to whether dogs could get salmonella. 3 of mine had it last year, Idexx labs confirmed it. (It wasn't from pig ears.) |

Ugh, pig ears are nasty pathogen wise. Not only do they affect the pups, but think of the people who don't wash their hands after handling them, or the toddlers that "share" with their canine siblings. |
Yeah, icky. We don't feed pig ears or even rawhide... though I know they'd love them. |
Along with raw hide and my experience there with peppa and having to pull it out of her throat and thank gawd I was home at the time, another friend of mine had the same thing happen with "Pigs ears" There two things now I would never give to my dogs ever. I also question to how hygienic they are when produced. I can see lots of heebie geebies blooming on things like that. |
We had that happen with Nikki... we reached in, removed it and threw it away. I wasn't smart enough at the time to foresee the possible problems they could cause. Maggie gulped a too-big-rawhide-piece down once and kept swallowing so we rushed her to the on-call vet. She wasn't choking but it was stuck too far back to even touch it. She got it down by the time we arrived. But then we had to watch for an obstruction. Nylabones aren't offered much here either because Emma and Panda were fracturing/breaking teeth. Darn but the bestest things from a dog's perspective often have a down side to them... |
