I'll try to be short. Mom is very self centered, dad is out of the picture, money is tight and very little insurance. I've seen and heard things that make me very scared and worried. Mom now admits that yes, she needs some help. Mom has very little parenting skills and of course this does not help. School has seen some of the problems but does nothing to help. Took her to a medical Dr. and he prescribed pills and mentioned OCD. What she needs is some low cost psychiatric help....long term. Where do I look for this. I'm trying to help but I don't know where to search for this. HELP!!!!!!!!!! |

We went through a similar situation with two of my neices some time ago, but all the resources we were able to scrape up were local- only programs, so where you are, and what's available there will make all the difference. We found some low cost or free help through the local university, some through the school, (if your DR gave any sort of diagnosis, the school physiologist and the special ed dept might need to know that) and some through our local Native Health Care Center. Up here, we also have a insurance program for low income children (Denali Kid Care), and there may be something like that in your state. If YOU, not the mother, are going to be seeking help for the girl, you will need legal permission, or no one will likely talk to you. We had a power of attorney, and that was enough until the girls turned 18. Good luck. I know how painful and frustrating this kind of situation can be! |
Try nami.org (national alliance on mental illness) for resources. I live in MN and there is mental health care available on a sliding scale basis through the county. I wonder since MN and WI are similar in many ways if the same resources or similar ones exist in WI. NAMI will know. However---and this is the big issue---in my area, it is very hard to find/obtain mental health care for adolescents, at least in part because I live in a small city. I am not sure about younger children. There are school programs but I cannot say how good they are. There are also parenting classes in MN through community ed. I know it may be hard to get mom to go but if it is as bad as you say, perhaps she will. I need to get to work but I will keep checking this thread. Hope you find what you need. NAMI.org should be a good initial resource. Also helps with people who live with people with mental illness. |
Mom needs to resch out to the school guidence counslor and the school psychologist If they feel she has OCD or any other diagnosis the school needs to have a team meeting It will include the nurse, teacher, principle, guidence counslor and school psychologist. Them an IEP can be written up ,at least for her school day The nurse and guidence counslor need to work together to help you (parents)find local afforadible help They should have a list of resources. How do I know this I was a school nurse I don't know what the law is in your state but maryland a parent can ask for this meeting and they have so many days to do it. The parents have to step up. Good luck I know this is a hard thing to do |
