Did any of you with cats have this issue? Are there things she can do to better prepare and introduce a puppy to her cat? I have never had a cat so couldn't be of much help, but I said I would ask you guys, because you guys know stuff!! She does read the forum so she can read your responses. Thanks for any guidance you can provide! |

A neutered male at ten years old is highly unlikely to take up the habit of spraying now no matter what the provocation.... |
It really depends on the cat. My cats have issues with other CATS more than they do with other animals. It took several months before they could tolerate our second pup. Then they just hated him but tolerated. They both love Yuki though (still took several months before they could touch each other). We always gave the cat the upstairs or the bedroom to get peace. there was always a palce for the cats to escape to (we have a gate between living room and dining room). And outside of that, there wasn't much more to it because the cat was going to stay pissed no matter what. They made the decision to come closer or not. The pup being in a cage helps too because they can sniff the new terror w/o being attacked. |
I agree with Mrs J it's usually another cat that will set a cat off spraying, but I guess you can never predict 100% how they will react. My siamese LOVES my dalmatian, he sleeps on the dog. And the dalmo is pretty cool with the cat too. But Rowdy the siamese was seriously p'd when Tiggy came home as a puppy. It took months for him to be ok with her, mainly because she LOVES to chase him. I have a lot of places where the cat can go to escape too. They have a love/hate relationship now. Rowdy will even go and tease Tiggy but he still gets shirty when she chases him. |
We had a neutered male cat and he welcomed (tolerated!!) two new puppies and a short term foster dog during his lifetime of 17 years and there was never an issue. He was a very social guy though, having been raised in a home with 2 kids and an existing dog and cat when he arrived. It may vary from cat to cat, but I would be surprised if it was an issue for your friend's cat at his age. |
We have always had cats and sheepies together. I have never had an issue with the cats spraying at all. I will say that all of our cats are neutered before they are old enough to spray so they never have even thought about it. We have introduced both ways--Adult dogs to kittens- and adult cats to puppies. I will note also that we have always had Persians and Sheepies--don't know if that makes a difference. Persians are very 'laid back' kitties and are not very territorial so that may make a difference--not sure. |
My cats and Kenzie get on ok. At times they find him a bit over-bearing - this huge thing nudging, chasing or licking them. One of them plays chase with him, the others just can't be bothered! It's important to leave them places that they can get away from him, if the want to. Nik |
We have two neutered male cats and they are tolerating our sheepie puppy (barely). We have some hissing and swatting, but definitely no spraying. And, in reality, I think if our pup wasn't so intent on chasing them (they get scared) they'd get along quite well. |
