I'm finally going to have the thrill of hearing Andrea Bocelli in person. |

Nice! Not my fav tenor but still will be a wonderful program. |
Live music is always a treat. Let us know what he sings! |

Not really sure what it is a like about him, sorta like Susan Boyle, maybe it seems to be an honesty in tone and style-- at least until the money machine gets rolling. |
Favorite??!! First let me say tenor is the least fav of the male voices for me (I'm leaving out that super high voice, counter tenor of which there really is only David Daniels) I'm a Bass and Baritone fan. Also realize in each of those 3 catagories there are different types for example in Tenor you have the bel Canto voice, Lyric voice (not much difference), Lyric, Dramatic, etc. Lyric/Bel Canto are the super stars, the ones that get a lot of attention. I think my fav right now, or today is Juan Diego Florez who sings the high C without effort, just lovely. Lawrence Brownlee is another Bel Canto par excellence but doesn't quite have that "flair" of Florez. Roberto Alagna is another tenor I enjoy. Another I think I enjoy as much or even more than Alagna is Marcelo Alvarez. Lyric tenor, haven't replaced Pavarotti yet though I did hear someone a few weeks ago who could...and can't remember his name Dramatic tenor....Placido Domingo of course (he can also sing Baritone), In the past there was my DH's fav Jussi Bjorling (I think he was a bit thin in voice) and Richard Tucker. Another current singer, Rolando Villazon has that rich tenor sound I like and rather thick, but his voice has broken once already. He may not have a long career. Finally one to watch.....and may be who I'm thinking of above is Jonas Kaufman. He's singing the current Met 2 productions of the Ring and once I get past the great Baritone/Bass Byrn Turfel, I believe I was blown away by Kaufman. I'll let you know in a few weeks when the second opera is shown, Die Walkure. |

I missed Rheingold, but plan on seeing Die Walkure on May 14th. I'd love to see the Ring cycle live someday, on my wishlist (*cough* Bayreuth). This will be the first time I tried the Met Opera HD, seems like a wonderful way to promote and spread great live opera at a fraction of the price. |
Yes Dave, we've been doing the Met's HDs for a couple of years now. It is a wonderful way to see an opera.......second only to going. Met tickets plus air fare plus hotel are not in my realm. As for the HD's I love the back stage during intermission where we get to see scene changes, interviews, etc. For those who don't speaka tha language the liberetto subtitles are great. Das Rheingold was wonderful. "The Machine" is awesome and put to amazing use in the first opera, can't wait for Die Walkure, especially the end when she is hanging upsidedown amidst the "flames." I suspect you'll be seeing a lot more HDs after your first experience. As for (cough) Bayreuth, I'm not sure my tussie could take the Ring all at once. What a perfect way to see it though! Met will be doing the other two next season. I'm thinking Montreal or Toronto did the whole Ring this or last season......and someone else was doing it here in the states as well........San Francisco?? Will never happen here at Santa Fe, I suspect the 2011-2012 Met Ring will be released on DVD in the future, they have been doing it with many of the HDs. |
Dave, Wednesday May 18th, replay of today's HD opera Il Travatore. You will thank me. Incredible! |
