Now I know how much she is eatting. It tells me to give her 2 3/4 cups of food a day for her weight and age. She is eatting about half of that to maybe 2 cups. Granted... she hasn't been all that active today... so I'm not sure. I was wondering if she was just adjusting to her food or not. I switched over to Wellness from Puppy Chow... do you think it's because the ingredients are so much richer that she isn't eatting as much right now? She did well with the transition though - she wouldn't eat wellness at first (even though I tried to mix it she would eat around it). I finally ran out of the puppy chow and she was forced to eat the dreaded wellness. She took to it great - no stomach upsets. (This is why I love wellness - my cats never had stomach problems either). Maybe I'm being a worry wart - and maybe she was just being a lazy buns and didn't want to do much today... I dunno. I just wondered if this was normal - even for one day? |

Don't worry too much about what the bag says. As long as she is putting on weight and you can't feel her ribs, she's not too thin. Clyde doesn't eat anywhere near the recommendations on the bag-- probably half if we're lucky. And, as you can see by the pictures, he's huge! At 7 months, he's over 60 pounds. |
I think what they recommend is really just a guide. My puppy Zeke is
11 weeks now and he is eating about 2 cups at each meal. I know it sounds like a lot, but he is doing just fine. I wouldn't worry. She will eat enough. Are you giving any supplements? If you are really worried maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask the vet about it. I think as long as she is feeling ok and isn't lethargic or sick she is probably just fine. Shellie |
I've never had a puppy ( ) but our adult dog eats 2 2/3 cups of a nutrient dense wellness food per day.
Plus he gets some doggie treats and the occasional tidbit in his dinner bowl. He's been losing weight nice and slowly, and we think he's getting to be at the right weight now, so maybe a little more food soon! |
You are right - she will probably eat enough. I'm such a worry wart.
I'm going to switch her off of puppy food soon to adult wellness food. I believe it's recomended to switch the big breeds off of the puppy food soon because of their bones developing too fast? |
I wouldn't switch her too fast as long as she's on a slow growth formula for puppies and doing well. Clyde's 7 months old and both my trainer and my vet said to keep him on it for awhile yet. Momo's still really young and would benefit from extra protein. I'm not an expert though, I only know what I've been told for Clyde. |
Hi Integra- Make sure you talk with your vet and your breeder before taking her off the puppy food! They should be able to advise you as to what is appropriate for the Momokins! Good luck

I too was concerned about the amount (or lack of) food that Benny was eating. But, I have found that if I leave his food out that he will eat when he is hungry. Luckily, he is not a "gobbler" and I can leave his food out all the time.
I have found, too that he tecnds to eat when I do. And also, there have been days when he doesn't eat at all. I guess he's just not hungry those days. But don't be worried as long as you supply your dog with food they will eat when they are hungry. Also, I have noticed that Benny eats more when the weather is cooler. |
Sounds like Momo is doing fine. The numbers on the bag are guidelines, as there are so many factors that contribute to proper growth in any individual puppy. With all of the fur, it can be tough to tell if a sheepdog is underweight, so I go by feeling the ribs, hips and spine for a thin layer of fat to tell if proper weight is being maintained.
Not to be terribly cynical, but keep in mind that dog food manufacturers are in the business of selling dog food. I have had two great eaters so far, and we always fed them at the low end of the range, or under it, in order to maintain a healthy weight. Maybe Momo will be one of those wonderful "self-regulators" who only eats what they need, rather than anything put in front of them, (whether edible or not)! Or everything that falls on the floor, or everything that sits on the table..... |
Nah - she won't be a self feeding (free feeding) dog... ever. I've already seen what it has done to my past dogs (and they didn't seem to eat a lot either) and to my cat Tigger. They had gotten fat around the middle and there wasn't much we could do but put them on a feeding schedule... which is a lot harder to start when they are used to being free fed.
I also like to keep tabs on how much and what my pets are eatting. It kind of sucks to go to the vet when they are sick and when they ask "is she eatting normally? how much is she eatting?" I wouldn't be able to tell them. Also - it keeps them from eatting each other's food. Not to mention it keeps the food from going stale or bad. |
Integra:
It's that Owensville, MO environment. She still thinks she's back on the farm. I feed Barney about 2 cups of large breed puppy formula by Diamond twice a day. The vet thinks he's just fine but recommends I stay on the puppy formuly till he is 10 months. At 6 months he weighed in at 65 lbs. |
They don't have large breed puppy formula in Wellness though - not that I am aware of anyway. |
I keep it easy and probally on the cheap, but not to cheap side too Purina Benefuls from 8 weeks on (since the bag says they can have it at that age and my vet was ok with it, my old OES ate it until he had to be put down at 15 as well). 40lb bag for under $20. goes a long way with two dogs...lol. Plus Winston had no problems with the transition, just dug right in |
I don't really know how many cups Jasper eats. He eats about 2 quarts out of his 3 quart bowl a day. He eats Iams large breed puppy food. We free feed him, but he never finishes a full bowl. The only other thing he gets is a biscuit or two a day, and he chews on rawhides. He drinks water like crazy though. We go through 2-3 3 quart dishes of water a day. He's growing great though, so I'm not too worried about it. |
JakobandBrandonsmom: You've got a water drinker too, huh? We thought something was wrong with Clyde so we took him to the vet, had all the tests done, and, lo and behold, he just loves water. We were having such a terrible time housetraining him that we had to start measuring it out. That way we knew he was getting enough but it wasn't 4 quarts a sitting! Does Jasper have to go constantly? |
As many of you may remember, I had a really hard time getting Dancer to eat anything, let alone what she was supposed to be eating... she has turned out fine though, she eats what her body knows she needs, and at 16 months now it is usually about 4 cups a day. Still on puppy food, as she is smallish, and Sky is only 10 months so it makes it easier. I probably won't switch them to adult until after Dancer's first litter is weaned. Then I'll switch both dogs to adult food. |
