Cleaning puppy teeth

Hi, we are new to the forum, this is my first post although I have been reading through the information when I get chance.
We have got a 16 week old OES she is adorable, she is our first OES and our first doggie!
I just wondered, when does/should teeth cleaning start and what do you use?
Thanks x

Awe, great question as 80% of dogs show signs of oral decay by age of 3 (I'm doing my M.S. thesis on this  ). I highly recommend starting to brush her teeth as young as possible to get her used to the routine. Use only toothpaste specifically formulated for dogs, as human toothpaste contains ingredients that can be harmful to your pup when swallowed.

If you've never brushed before, start by just putting a bit on your finger and let her lick it off. You can then progress to using either a finger brush or a human brush (I use a kid's brush, very soft bristles). Brush in circular motions and don't forget to the interior side of the teeth. There are many formulas on the market right now, I use Petrodex Poultry Flavored Toothpaste (it has an enzyme that helps remove plaque and tarter build-up). You may need to try to few flavors until you find one your pup loves.

Although I would ideally brush Oliver and Lucy's teeth daily, it is more like 3-4 times a week that I actually get around to it. Mine adapted very quickly to having their teeth brushed and actually come running when I get their toothpaste and toothbrushes out.

Oh, and welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see pics of your little girl! Sixteen weeks is such a cute age!
Thank you so much for your reply, that is really helpful. I will go out and get some doggie toothpaste and a children's toothbrush.
And thank you for your kind welcome :)

she's probably the expert BUT.... I think most people just give their dog a bone to chew on.

I brushed and brushed my smaller dog's teeth when she was a puppy and by 6 months ... she needed a dental. It was genetics.

I did mouthwash which you put in the water and that helped A LOT with the bad breath.

My OES can't chew bones. Genetics again come into play ...she bleeds like CRAZY within a few seconds on a bone and every vet has looked at her teeth. She still needs a dental every other year. We've done brushing, wax that you put on their teeth, all kinds of crap with her too.
It's good to start young but don't be surprised if trying to brush turns into a hardcore biting and play session in a young puppy. She's going to try to munch that brush like crazy! It's smart though, the earlier you start, the more she'll get used to it.

Dental care is one of the biggest challenges for all dog parents. You have already been given some good advise here so I'll chime in with just a few comments. Instead of a manual brush you should consider some kind of power brush. I use the Crest "Spin Brush" which has both a rotating head and a reciprocrating section. The big advantage to powered brushes is that you get far more strokes per unit time than you could ever accomplish with a manual brush. That way you get a much better brushing in far less time so they are less likely to fidget. Also try a couple of the flavoured toothpastes to find out which one your Botail likes. Mine are partial to the liver flavoured one, they are okay with the chicken but absolutely hate the mint flavoured ones!! Don't worry about the liver flavour, it doesn't really adversely affect their breath.

As first time owners I don't recommend you get any more involved than that. Even very experienced owners rarely do cleanings themselves as that requires either a vet's care or a lot of experience and a very well trained dog to tolerate that level of invasive procedures without an anaesthetic.

Good luck with your new bundle of joy and welcome to the forum.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
