2 hours after being home, Baxter began to vomit. We all thought it was from the stress of the day. I stayed in the Livingroom w/ Baxter to keep an eye on him through the night. Baxter was very restless and continued to vomit throughout the night. Neither of us had any sleep. By 9am, Baxter was at the local vet. He was immediately admitted for Parvo-virus. By Sat. afternoon, Baxter was back home, after showing signs of progress and being a little fiesty. Baxter kept pulling out his IV's and was causing a raucous, so we decided to bring him home since the vet. would be closed till Monday @ 9am. After numerous episodes of vomiting and lack of interest in food or water, Baxter was taken to PVSEC a 24 hr. care hospital in the area after just a few hours of being at home. We were very worried, but were encouraged by the statistics and they're assessment that he wasn't the worst they've seen that had recovered. Baxter started to go downhill after being admitted. By Thursday morning April 14, 2011, Baxter was going into Sepis and we were advised that we needed to stop. It was one of the hardest decisions of our lives. I went to the hospital for my final visit alone and held Baxter, kissed him goodbye, apologized for the hard life he had and thanked him for being in our lives if for just a short time. Then scratched him behind his ear as he hugged my arm and drifted off to sleep from the medication. We are all devastated, by the short time we had w/ Baxter but he will stay in our hearts forever. Baxter touched our hearts in a special way and our love for the breed will drive us to get another puppy. We live just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa and are looking for a breeder within driving distance. Any information would be greatly appreciated. We don't want to go through this again. Our "breeder" has refused to work w/ us w/ the $5000.00 in expenses we accumulated in treating Baxter, accused us of being wrong about his health and it turns out she's not in Texas, but Mexico. I want to make sure I can see where my next fluffly family member is coming from, meet the breeder face to face and meet at least 1 of the parents. Thanks in advance for the information anyone can provide. Michelle |

welcome and so very sorry for your loss.. i am sure you will learn alot here |
That is very sad. I am so sorry for your loss and the emotional toll it has taken on you and your family. I just got teary-eyed reading this. You will get some great advice here and as long as you are willing to drive a bit of a distance, you will find a new puppy soon enough so you can meet the parents (both 4 legged and 2 legged) and see the conditions. |
I am so sorry for your heartbreak. Reading your post made me want to punch something, probably the horrible breeder. Spend some time browsing these forums, especially the getting a puppy forum (read the stickies!). When you and your family are ready to love another sheepie, ask a million questions here about good breeders and everything else we wont mind. A sheepdog is such a wonderful addition to life. |
I am so sorry ~ ~welcome to this wonderful forum. |
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of sweet sheepie pup Baxter. It was good that you were with him when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Tears, |
So sad for you and the little guy. |
What a horrible horrible story. I'm so sorry for your loss and heartbreak. Given they had misrepresented their location, I am somewhat surprised that the breeder even bothered to ship you a puppy once they had your money. The OESCA breeder referral list is a great place to start. Also, we do have a number of members in Pennsylvania, and there is the Philly picnic coming up and the New England Picnic coming up. All places where you can meet owners, rescuers and probably some breeders too. |
If the breeder hadn't been in Mexico you could have taken her to court. Alas........what a sad story. Yes, there is a lot of good info here, info on what to look for and what to avoid. Go thru old posts first...there are literally years of experience here. |
Oh Michelle--I am so sorry for your loss. What a terrible situation-your story brought tears. You have found the right place for support and information. Special thoughts for you and your family at this tough time. |
I am so so solrry for your loss, but so happy that little Baxter at least was given love and affection and dignity at the end. As for finding a new puppy, I think that Ron's suggestion of going to the sheepie picnic in Philly is a great idea-make some connections. And use this forum to help guide you. In the meantime to you and your family. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=33065 |
My heart is breaking for you and your family. Best of luck in finding another puppy to help you heal from your loss. Laurie and Oscar |
I'm so sorry for your family and of course, Baxter. The loss of a puppy shouldn't happen to anyone, especially a child. I hope you'll become a part of our family here. Many of the members are so knowledgeable and helpful, you'll receive great advice and guidance. Good luck in finding your new baby. |
Thank you everyone for your nice messages. It has helped and made me cry. I never thought that I would be so sad and cry so much for a pet that really was only in my possesion for 19 hr. over 2 days. Our story of Baxter, how he came to us, where he came from and the people responsible became more confusing by the day. To answer a few of the questions raised. I paid via PayPal, and was able to stop payment the morning after he arrived upon learning of his illness. Baxter turned out not to be the puppy we chose via, puppyfind.com in the advertisement. I was so happy when he arrived, I didn't even realize it until my husband pointed out his markings and eyes. We didn't care though, he was so loveable, after he overcame his fear. After contacting my creditcard company, I attempted to contact the breeder. She wouldn't answer her phone or emails, till PayPal notified her of the dispute. I traced the number from my caller I.D., once she did contact me yelling about dispute then hung up, and located her in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico. After looking more closely at the documentation that Baxter arrived with, which wasn't much, the vet book was also from Mexico. The one bright side in all of this is, although Baxter came from Mexico, and the person who received the funds is in Mexico, the name listed as the owner in the Mexican vet papers, and Texas Interstate Health Certificate "is" a citizen of the US who has a residence in El Paso, TX. According to the vet office who sees all the dogs that he brings in for health certificates before shipping, he presents himself as the breeder. I will be filing a lawsuit against him soon, since Baxter was delivered to PA. Recovering the $5000.00 in vet hospital fees isn't as important as making sure they are never able to do this to another American family. I'm amazed at the hoops I have to jump through though. I've filled out numerous forms with both my credit card & PayPal. I have to now forward everything to puppyfind.com after publishing a not so polite review of M.M. I want to make sure she can't advertise or accept payment through PayPal. I'm open to any advice or ideas anyone else has. Thanks again. |
