Every once in a while the lights will go on by themselves. It happened last night so I figured the battery in the remote was dying. I turned the lights off with the rmote and took the battery out. The lights were still in the on position via the pull chain but they weren't lit since I turned them off with the remote. A few minutes later the lights came back on! I freaked. out. Turned the pull switch to the off position and took the bulbs out of the fixture. So do I have an electrical issue, or a ghost? I layed awake for 4 hours being scared and am still nervous this morning. |

Probably someone else nearby with the same remote control code. If it is adjustable and you can find your instruction manual you might be able to change the code. |
Let me add that my previous comment assumes that the remote is an "RF" (radio frequency) remote and not an "IR" (infra-red) device. An IR device will have a little plastic bulb OR a dark red plastic cap on one end. It is light based, so it requires fairly close proximity to the receiver. An RF device will likely have no obvious antenna or bulb or other sign. If you have an RF device, it's likely that the receiver isn't functioning properly. You could try cleaning it, but it's likely it needs to be replaced. |
You need Darcy to chime in here... she is the ghost expert. |
Oh yeah, Darcy and her ghost. She was so nice to the ghost, remodeled the kitchen and then sold the place. I'm sure the ghost enjoys it's updated house and new residents. Normally I would have said the problem is in the wiring, something loose somewhere, but you threw in the remote and I'm lost. |
Ron, it's an IR device. And the bulbs went on even with the battery not in the remote. So I'm thinking (hoping, praying) that it's an electrical issue. Now that you mention it, I remember a few years ago my garage door opener was opening a door 3 houses down from me! And that was an IR device, so maybe that's what is happening here. As far as ghosts, I don't mind if my mom or dad visit me, but I don't want outsiders around! |
For me with an old house and old wiring, I would DEFINITELY choose the ghost over electrical issues!! |
Make sure that your fan/light DOES NOT have the "Auto On" feature which will turn the fan on when the temperature in the house reaches a certain preset level. Our old one had that that feature. |
I have to admit that would have freaked me out too and I would have done the same things you did, ie turn it off and take the bulbs out. It could be that someone near you has the same code for the remote and it works on yours...it COULD be(lets go with that) |
