I just bought an old english sheep puppy and am having trouble agreeing with my husband on a name for him........help? |
|
What names are you considering? What are your interests, loves? Give us a little background, and we'll be happy to help!!

I always stand by the idea of naming a dog something that neither of you will be embarassed to yell out if he gets away from you. As I've said in another post, there's nothing sadder than a tough, masculine guy, running down the street calling out to "Sweetie" or "Baby"! |
We name our dogs human names, just to confuse the neighbors. It also makes it sound like you have kids if people overhear you talking about them! |
There is a post "how did you name your dog"
in general chat ! Fun to read. Congratulations on your new puppy ! |
Me & my hubby just kept calling out name after name until we found one we both like. We went through A LOT of names before hubby came up with Jasper. We hadn't even met him when we named him, but it fits him perfectly. Hope you find a name you both like soon! |
My only suggestion is that you try yelling the name out your door before
you actually settle on it. Make sure it isn't a name you are going to shorten to something you don't want to be yelling in public. We gave the name Astin some thought, but I know me..... Shellie |
My first sheepdog was named Lester it is still my favorite name. |
My first sheepie was named Buford, a name I love to this day. He was a rescue, so we didn't name him.
Second sheepie was Farley, but that's pretty common now. Also a rescue, so we didn't name him. Current dog is a rescue too, so we didn't name her either - she's Dresdan, or Drezzie, or Drez. I would love to name another male dog Buford. We've also discussed Hoover, because if anything falls on the floor, it's not there for long! And Hoover seems to fit a sheepie, don't you think? Chris |
Hoover definitely fits a Sheepie. I also agree that you should go to the door and scream the name a few times. We didn't get to name ours either, as he was already over a year (the vet thinks) when we got him. I wonder what the neighbors think when I go to the door and yell Puddy. Do they wonder "Is she trying to caulk the windows or fix the walls?" . |
Sometimes I look at Clyde and think that I should have named him Puddy, after Elaine's dopey boyfriend on Seinfeld. They have the same look sometimes
I agree with Maxmm though. I definitely prefer human names. A friend of ours didn't even get creative and just named his dog Steve. It fits him too! |
Wow - I didn't know everyone got so embarassed about calling out cutsie names. My boyfriend and I don't have those sort of reservations I suppose. I thought it might be embarassing to give your dog a bad name mean pet name. You know... like people calling their pup "Bastard" or something. I think that would be embarassing...
I think Brad could run down the street yelling "Where's my most preciousest pup in the whole wide world?!" and I wouldn't think any less of him. That's just us though. I also like human names... or unusual names that no one else gives their dogs or cats. I think it helps a lot when you are in a crowded area - and you are the only one with the dog named Momoko or Fimbrethil. When we went to the pet fair I really appriciated this because she knew her name - Momoko - while our lady friend's dogs were named Austin and Rocky (not that those are bad names)... but do you know how many dogs are named that around here? Wow! I think 8 dogs must have wanted to go to her when she tried making her own dogs calm down. It also helps a lot when you are talking on message boards if your cat has a weird name (then maybe 1 more person might name their cats that). Halifax and Kiley do no have a match yet - so everyone knows who I am talking about when they see their names. Tigger on the other hand... I think I encountered the 25 other people named their cats Tigger phase right now. I also think if you give your pets complicated or different names that it gives them a little dignety. Don't worry about the name too much though - because you will probably be using their pet names more than their actual name anyway. |
You could use food names...ie Cheeto my first OES whom was a rescue. Or my other pup Beagle Bagel. Using regular names is good too. |
Seeing that you have a boy my favorites:
Jackson Jake Jag (we may use this next) Winston Trapper Fischer Bentley Diesel Hawke Phoenix Ryder Kane Hudson Hemi Magnum Sterling |
no no no - I am not embarassed. I just meant to make sure the shortened
version of the name is publicly acceptable. In my house we tend to use the first sylable- example Astin - I would not want to be yelling out A*s out the back door. I don't mind if it is too cutesy - just not rude or misunderstood. We were on the way to picking up our puppy and I found myself dropping possible names from the list after yelling them in various forms. Some of them were actually too funny to use, and some were just, well, Astin. Shellie |
Lol. I guess I wouldn't be embarassed persay, I'd just feel like kind of a tool! My boyfriend and I are so not cutesy people so it just wouldn't fit us. That doesn't mean we don't talk that to the dogs but, hey, we got an image to maintain |

Also if the dog will be registered you got to have one of those high falutin monikers to impress people when he/she becomes a champion. Eg. Herr Bernard von Leopold - alias Barney |
I named a dog Ike once because it sounded like a bark. He was the smartest dog I have every owned. |
I also like Pugsley |
I have Jackson Wiggle (Jack) and Annabelle (Annie). When and if we get another male.....long time from now.....his name will be Darby. A girl will probably be "Here comes the sun" with her call name Sunny. I always have an easier time naming the boys that the girls, and that went for the uprights as well.
Good luck and Congratulations on your new pup, I am sure you will find the perfect name!! |
Before we got Momo, we had an offer for a boy German Shepherd Dog and another offer of a girl German Shepherd Dog (out of the blue). For the girl the people changed their minds and for the boy... well... Momo became available. ^_^
I swore that if we got the boy though - I would call him "Gumdrop" I got so tired of hearing "Fang" "Killer" and all those other names they like to put on those tough looking dogs that I wanted to go against the norm. I think I would have also painted his nails red... and gave him a pink bandana... mwa ha ha ha! |
I have all kinds of names I'd like to use, but if I get that many dogs my own name will be mud, or perhaps, ShedTroll because that's where I would have to live...lol....
For my long term plan though, to keep a pup from Dancer, and her name will be Caoimhe (pronounced Kiva) which is celtic and means beauty, gentleness and grace. A pup kept from Sky someday will be named Storm, and if I ever get a male oes someday, his name is Durc. |
I heard on NPR not too long ago that names of 2 sylables that end in "e" or "o" are the easiest for a dog to learn.
At the end of the day I'm not sure what we name our pups really matters, they become THAT NAME. I hated the name Tasker but kids and ex INSISTED and now I absolutely can't imagine any other name for him. If you GOOGLE "DOG NAMES" you will find different sites that give you lots of names. I think one site is 2000 names for dogs, but if I remember correctly the names haven't been edited and there are some pretty ugly ones on the list. |
I'd always heard that too Tasker's Mom. However, I find that Lucy and Clyde like to "play deaf" equally so, with them, sound of the name doesn't seem to matter! I had also heard it was always good to do 2 syllables no matter what so they didn't associate their names with one syllable commands. Even knowing this, I still went with Clyde |
We named our dogs after The Dukes of Hazzard. Our first was Flash, now we have Beau, Luke, Rosco and Daisy. I have neighbors that have Guido and Megan, used to have Carlo(all were OES) |
After travelling and sailing in the Fiji Islands for about 3 months, I found the Fijian people to be the warmest and friendliest people that I had ever met and for that reason I named my first sheepie "Nandi" which is the name of a town down there. Everything time that I called her, it would bring back wonderful memories of the beaches, the ocean, (its also where I learned to scuba dive and got certified), of the people and that would always put a smile on my face.
Nandi ended up being just as warm, friendly, fun loving and very sociable just as the Fijians were and always put on a smile on my face even when I watched her sleep. When I adopted my other 2 sheepies, they were already named Demi and Dallas. I always thought that if I had 2 pups, I would name them Salt and Pepper. One pup, probably "Suds". But my next ones would probably be named "Mauii" for the gorgeous Island (that I adore - I even tried to move there but could not get my green card) which you all know about and I found to be Paradise and I would name the other one "Cheyenne" in honour of the great North Americans Indians who I really respect and admire.
