This really means a lot to me because I never imagined myself working with people in this way. Nelson is a natural at it. The first few times we walked into the facility people didn't know how to react. Now even those whose memories are failing always recognize Nelson as he walks into the room. Residents and staff love him and visitors are amazed at what we're doing and are grateful that therapy teams are welcome to come into the facility. Nothing turns heads like an Old English Sheepdog! On one visit we walked by a room where we didn't typically visit, a husband and wife who kept mostly to themselves. That day the door was open and the room was full of people, many of them children. The gentleman motioned to us to come in and the kids all swarmed around Nelson and hugged him. It took a few minutes to realized that his wife had passed away just hours before. We offered our condolences and the man grabbed Nelson and hugged him as he cried. It was a sad moment but it made me feel very good about what we do. We're well on our way to the next TDI level requiring 150 total visits. For anyone thinking about becoming a therapy team with your dog don't hesitate to give it a try. Congratulations to my big boy Nelson!!! |

Yay! The only thing that could've made that picture better was if Nelson was wearing the same hat as the guy. |
