Danita's Latest Rescue Effort

Hi!

This is our latest rescue effort. Her name is Daisy. We came from the park a few week ago and noticed a couple walking a sheepdog... and what are we to do? Stop the car and run at them, of course!!!

It turned out to be a nice sheepie, but she was HEAVILY matted and drity. We talked to the owners and they told us that they had bathed her to try to remove the mats, but it was no use. We explained them that water is like super glue for mats and that it was no use to bath her, she needed to be shaved :( We gave them the number of our groomer and left all upset because they had neglected their doggie :x.

Danita suggested that we visited them in a couple of days to see if they followed our advise and check on her, so we did, since they live 2 blocks away from our house. We were greeted by Daisy's mom, who explained to us that they had not been able to take her to the groomer, so we offered to drive her to the groomer because we were afraid her sking may get hurt because of the mats. She let us in an started talking to us. It turned out that her hubby lost his job and has been struggling a lot to get a new one, she's 6 month pregnant and had to quit her job as a dentist because of her delicate pregnancy and of top of that, they are about to loose their home because the temp job her husband got is bareley making ends meet.

We offered to pay for the groomer's service and they agreed, so there she goes, to our fabulous groomer!

Poor Daisy! She's trying to figure out what will happen at the groomer's place.

He took great care of her and shaved her down, bathed her and placed a nice bandana on her neck so she looked pretty... I love this guy.

After she got shaved down we took her to Lennon and Sofa so they could play in the park. They got along so so... She's social around people but does not get along with dogs well. She's not aggresive, but she's very shy and gets scared easily, so they are learning to play with each other.

Once she was shaved down, we took a closer look to her skin, and she's terribly skinny!!!! You could see her ribs close to her skin. Danita opened a can of food for her and she vaccumed it out of the plate... She's definitvely very hungry! We talked to Daisy's famiy to find out what and how often she eats, and they told us that because of the financial trouble they are going trough, they stopped feeding her dog food and feed her rice and chicken pieces once a day... Poor Daisy.

After that being said, we went to petsmart to buy her a sack of protein rich food so she can be fed twice a day with rice, chicken and some protein so she gains weight fast, we dropped the bag yesterday to their home, talked to them and played with Daisy for a while.

Here she is, all shaved down and ready for action!

We're becoming friends with this family, they are nice people and very friendly! We'll also continue working with them to keep Daisy up to date so they can keep her as a pet, their chlidren love her and she loves them too! We hope to continue to keep on helping this family on the hard times they are going trough, that way they can keep their doggie and she will not have to go trough the hard experience of being placed in a shelter of a foster home until things get better.

We want to thank everyone for making this possible, as some of the funding for helping Daisy came from the

Help A Shleter!
line of products. Thanks for helping us help the needy sheepies!!... We wish we could adopt all of them, but until we can do that, we're helping as much as we can.

Thanks for letting us share our story!

What a thoughtful and caring gesture to this couple in need.
You kindness to this family will be remembered...
Daisy looks beautiful in her cool summer cut !!!
Our prayers are with the family.
Bless your work...
What a tremendously generous gesture you guys are making. I know Daisy and her family are grateful to have met two such wonderful people!! Thank you for what you are doing to help this lovely family! :D
What big hearts you have! I'm sure Daisy was in heaven with her new short hairdo, now that it's getting so hot down your way. And her family must be inspired by the fact that there are good people in the community willing to help out during such a tough time in their lives.
Danita & Saul,
You two are a remarkable couple. Your kindness has gone above and beyond what most people would have done. Thank You for taking care of Daisy as I am sure she is grateful for the haircut, food and the love.
You guys are awesome. Keep us updated on Daisy's condition.
Elissa
You guys are absolutely amazing!!!!!!

If only there were more people like you guys in this world we would live in a much better place. Thank you so much for being who you are.

And keep up the good work!
Hi,

I second and third what everyone says about you guys! You're the best!!! Reminds me of that movie "Playing it forward" where you help out someone and they in turn may get the chance to do it for someone else in the future. I would nominate you guys for angel wings anyday!! Wonderful story!!

Marianne and the boys
You guys are awesome! That was such a wonderful thing you did. I know the family and Daisy appreciates it. I hope they get back on their feet soon. I hate hearing about situations like that. :(
I think Barbra Streisand needs to come out with a new song:
"People, rescue people are the luckiest people in the world".
You guys deserve a pat on the back and much more!
You guys are GREAT!
Every one of us who has read this wonderful story should now do
something extra for a dog in need or a shelter in need. Our
own version of "paying it forward" - like Marianne said. I will go
tomorrow and take some bags of food to our shelter. You have
inspired me. Thanks Dani and Saul

Hi. :D

GREAT job from GREAT people. You guys are super sheepie HEROES. Nice to see that people are willing to help out a family in need and a beautiful sheepie in need also. I'm sure that there are a lot of reasons why you decided to help them out but the main one would be "because you wanted to".

I lived and worked in Mexico and Cuba for a while and it was sad to see the state of some of those dogs. I helped out where I could but there were so many of them.

Maybe we could all adopt this sheepie long distance and pitch in somehow. Maybe we could send some money to one location in the States and then they could forward the money to you and you could be Daisy's Aunt and Uncle for all of us. I feel for the family as much as the dog so I hope that as much as you want to help, we can be part of this too.

Thanks.

Uncle Pete :D
WoW!! What a great thing to do to help those folks out. :-)

I bought a mousepad from Danita's "help a shelter pet" line about a month or two ago. I'm happy that the proceeds can help out in their local community! Please remember that there really aren't any Rescues in Mexico the same way that we know them here in the States. I'm always fascinated by the differences in standards for pet care between different countries.

In Europe, it's a much different sitiuation. There is quite a bit less Rescue work over there, and I've heard stories that folks are allowed to bring their pets to places like public restaurants, etc. As much as our sheepies are part of our families, I think the US has quite a bit of way to go to get to that level.

When you get a chance, take a look at her store and help support the sheepies! :-)

~Katie.

I had friends in Belgium who had an OES. What a sweet dog. They would take him to restaurants all the time. He would sit under the table until they were finished w/o any begging, jumping etc.
We have a long way to go....
Wow Sandy Sheepie!!! I wish mine were like that

Katie and Uncle Pete made an excellent point there. In Latin America the rescue effort is practically non-existent. Our dog population is at least 50% stray dogs that you see on the street, and I would say that from the other 50% that have owners that care for them, 20% can roam the streets free. Add that to the fact that people does not neuter or spay their dogs because you would "take away the joy of parenthood" and "will be less of a dog" if you do that, and the fact that for a lot of people dogs are a property and not a friend, and you can imagine the kind of situation we have here.

The few animal welfare organizations that exist are most of the time understaffed and with a very limited budget, so they do what they can. Rescue in Latin America is mostly done by word of mouth. Whenever people need to surrender their cats or dogs, they look for someone who can take care of them with their friends and family. If that does not work, the animals are a lot of times released into the streets where (hopefully!) someone will pick them up if they are purebreed.

It's really sad to see that the situation is like that here. Our dream is that we could open a shelter one day where we could take in those animals that people need to surrender and give them a home. At the same time, I'd love to find a way to educate people about the fact that dogs are much more complex than what you give them credit for. People here also looks at us weird because we've rescued dogs from the shelter, because there's the idea that dogs from the shelter are no good, so there's still a loooong way to go educating the people about why it's nice to get a dog from the shelter and the benefits of neuter and spay

Sigh.... I guess we'll need to win the lottery to start that dream :( In the meantime, we'll continue helping as much as we can. One dog we can help is a dog less that will end up in the shelter or the streets, right?
Shame, shame, shame.... that is all I can say. I am glad that you are helping, but why in the world do you tout all that you have done in such an open forum. Very shameful. Quite despicable.
WOW! I never heard of a "rescue in place!" That is so great that you are helping this family stay together, like a guardian angel. Daisy looks so beautiful and so happy. Nice work!!

Shame on YOU, you coward that posted the above response!:evil::evil: Hurray for Saul and Danita for helping out a family in need AND reminding us that there are people and animals less fortunate. Sometimes we need a little inspiration from others to do good deeds ourselves. I applaud Saul and Danita for all their generousity. :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

Nita
YAY for Dantia and Saul, I have not read this story before and it just makes me all warm and fuzzy to read what you have done for this family.

Sadly situations like that occur and it is nice to know that you are helping them keep this girl. Financial problems are sad and we all know how expensive keeping a dog is too.

I commend & applaude you and danita for the help, support and guideance you are giving this family. A wonderful result and wish there were more people like you in the world, wouldn't the world be a better place then for all of us and all the 4 legged kids too

Angels both of you :D

I couldn't disagree more. People need to hear MORE stories like this to open our eyes to the possibilities. I love this story because it shows that you can help a family in need by supporting their dog during a difficult time. It's a great example to the rest of us who might not have time to do full time rescue but still want to help.

Keep up the great work Saul, you and Danita are inspirations!
To Shame on You,

This post was written over a year ago and Saul and Danita have always had open hearts and minds when it comes to assisting folks in their country that otherwise may not have had the opportunity to get help. As he stated, rescue in his country is practically non existant and they are stepping up. They are making a difference and allowing us to know about their rescues , we as a family here on the OES forum help each other out and support one another. He is showing how our contribution to purchasing products they make, supports this work. There is no bigheadedness about it. He and Danita are hero's in my book!! Helping even one life makes a difference to that dog.

Shame on YOU!!!! :x

I want to hear about what they're doing, partly because I made a donation to their cause and I enjoy seeing where the money goes. It's not a horn-tooting thing at ALL. It's very heartwarming to hear about Rescue in other places.
To Shame on you,
Obviously you completely missed the whole point of this section of the forum. It is called Rescuing a Sheepdog
I agree with everyone else. This is a wonderful story about two wonderful caring people that helped a dog and owner in need.
I applaud their efforts :clappurple:
Wow... Talk about resurecting an old post! 8O

Shame On You, I'm sorry if you felt like we're making a parade about rescuing a dog and trying to make a difference in a dog's life, but you missed the point of the post there, telling the story of a dog that was helped, like many more you'll read on this part of the forum.

I believe it's important that everyone who rescues a dog keeps on telling about their experiences, that enriches the community and helps us convince that adopting is good!

Thanks everyone who jumped out in our support, it encourages us to keep on doing what we can and makes us really, really, really grateful to be part of such a wonderful community :hearts:. We'll keep on working by putting our grain of sand to keep the rescue movement alive and continue to cheer for the ones that keep on doing it, big or small. :high5: :clappurple:
