I'm starting to wonder if Matties greatly increased water drinking could be because of changing her thyroid medicine. We doubled the dose just a month ago. My vets not in until tomorrow so I will be calling back in the morning. I understand that her urine doesn't concetrate, but does Incipidus just escalate like that. I got up this morning and both water bowls were empty. She sleeps with her head right by her bowl now. It's almost and obsession. Has anyone had this problem trying to get there dogs thyroid meds adjusted? Lisa Frankie and Mattie |

I'd take her in and have her thyroid levels tested again to be sure she's not hyperthyroid now. With both a low thyroid and DI diagnosis, it's likely best to eliminate high thyroid as being a cause. When thyroid levels are too high, it can cause pacing, nervousness, panting, rapid heartbeat, weight loss, etc. due to the increased metabolic state. (Maggie needed to have her thyroid meds lowered once.) Increased thirst too... http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/end ... thyroidism Quote: Increased thirst (polydipsia) http://pethealth.petwellbeing.com/wiki/ ... thyroidism Quote: Also, excessive thirst may accompany the characteristic voracious appetite. http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/health/thyroid.htm Quote: If the dose is too high, signs of hyperthyroidism such as panting, nervousness, increased thirst and urination, and increased appetite can occur. These symptoms resolve quickly once the doctor adjusts the dose. http://www.ehow.com/about_5046093_hyper ... -dogs.html http://www.ehow.com/facts_5602265_sympt ... idism.html Quote: The dog is often excessively thirsty. Here's another link too on DI http://www.diabetesinsipidus.org/di_in_pets.htm I hope they'll get her system balanced soon. |
Good question and good answer ladies. I didn't know about the increased thirst with hyperthyroidism just the increased appetite. Good luck with Mattie. |
This article in particular (a link at the address above) seems to provide a lot of information on DI- http://www.diabetesinsipidus.org/pets_d ... riends.htm |
Oscar has never experienced increased thirst with levothyroxine. Poor Mattie. Hopefully your vet will be able to help you figure this out. Laurie and Oscar |
