Boarding...uck

We are going to Vegas in May and are told dogs are not allowed 8O

I don't want them stuck in a kennel all day with just potty breaks. Simon would be fine with other dogs but Gar...I don't know what it is but other dogs don't like him. It may be the way he walks or the way he smells or something but other dogs come to attention when he is in the area...and its not a good attention. Its more like a challenge, and he won't back down. He's never been in a fight but when in contact with other dogs I keep him muzzled because he tends to nip at hind ends if another dog runs by and thats not a good thing.

I just made reservations at a daycare that does boarding(they stayed there once) and they will test him to see how he does with other dogs. I don't have high hopes. I'm not sure if I want them in with other dogs there either because I asked the ratio of people to dogs and they told me its 20:1.

Maybe I'll just do the boarding thing, its only for 5 days. Last time we were away for more then a day was 2yrs ago.

Thats Gar in the middle
I don't board when I travel, I hate it too. I have someone who stays at my house with Oliver and Lucy. Oliver and Lucy are so much more comfortable in their own home. Do you know anyone that would do this for you? Too bad you don't live closer, I'd volunteer!
Ah poor sweetie. I'd love for Mady to meet him, she's only ran into one dog ever who she didn't like (for no reason; she thankfully avoids aggressive dogs). You don't have any friends or family who could take him?
I don't know what's available near you, but we had a great boarding facility in Maryland that allowed us to keep both of our guys together in a single run, and then we paid an extra $3 per day for "play time." They'd take just our two out together in a double fenced area, and one of the kennel helpers played with them. It was well worth the couple of extra bucks, and since my one guy was not sociable with other dogs, it worked well for him. Maybe you can find something similar?

Good luck!

:)
Love the pic  ...I have the same thoughts right now since we leaving this weekend and putting Yuki somewhere too. It's so rare and just the thought of her eating her butt all weekend (anxiety) kills me ...and her being on concrete (poor joints!). We have scheduled a 4 special 30 min. play times a day with just a worker because I don't trust Yuki with other dogs. She herds, and I don't want another dog to get annoyed and bite her.
I was also going to say have someone come to your home. My friends had a lady come to theirs when they went on vacation. She came about a week before and meet the dogs and went over everything. She didnt sleep there but she came 4 times a day (more if you need her to) and would feed and play with the dogs for 30-40 mins each time. It worked great for them. Google dog house sitters for your area and something might come up. Or maybe an older neighboor hood teen would be able to come by a few times a day to do this and make some money. Just a thought... :bulb: We have on here called Denton County Pet Sitters Assoc. They give you a list of people they have checked out and are licensed to take care of pets. Back ground checks and all are done. Im sure you can find something like this in your area, might make it easier on your pets and you to know they are safe at home.
We are lucky to have found a pet sitter for our trip the end of April. I wouldn't even consider going, but it's our sons wedding

Our lady was referred by our vet, has met Charm and will return prior to our departure. I'm still nervous though, but Charm will be home.

Perhaps you could find someone in that manner?
Just a forewarning about having someone come into your home to watch your kiddos. You either need to really trust the person you are having come in (if anything should happen, they are your "friend", not your dog-sitter) or they need to be insured. I know you will be, but just be careful about who you let watch them.

Absolutely, not something to be overlooked. And I'm comforted by having a friend "on call" for any emergencies.
Dh does not want anyone in the house or the dogs going to someone else's house if they don't have a fenced yard. Yeah, he's a hard "nut" to crack.
I don't know if you have petsmart's near you Some now have doggy hotels and I believe you can view them on line (the dogs) The one near me seems really nice and someone is there 24 hrs. You may want to look into that.
I just went on a 17 day vacation - it was the first time in 10 years that I had the chance to get away. OMG!! I stressed over the upcoming time and really didn't want to even go but for the promise that i would finally meet Kaj's family in Holland for the first time. It took 10 years to convince me to leave the critters.

Plus,it took two months of prep time for all the animals and I too stressed over who would watch them. There's two schools of thought. One is you get a valued friend or family member to watch the furkids or you get professional pet sitters. The other option is a kennel but i can tell from your post you are not comfortable with that especially when you quoted the ratio of dogs to person.

The thing about friends or family watching them is if something comes up for them they may cancel or be unable to commit should an emergency arise for them. You don't get that with professional pet sitting companies as they are bonded/insured and have a host of people working for them that are experienced.

We kenneled Panda and Snoop and left Gilligan and Merlin at home with the pet sitters who stayed in our home. I thought 4 dogs plus the other animals would be too overwhelming for anyone as there is so many interactions involved.
I met two of the young woman who would live in my house and the company reps at my home and was impressed with their service. it helped that I posted on Hugabull site which is local to my area and asked for recommendations. Nine people responded and seven mentioned this company - thought that was pretty good.
Anyhow, depending on where you live I'd check out if a Professional pet sitting company exist in your area. Otherwise you may want to check out other kennels and see if the ratio of dog to people is smaller. Some kennels are willing to take dogs that aren't that dog friendly as they have many outdoor runs in which each dog(s) gets daily time out to run and play.

Panda and Snoop went to prison - where they were looked after by the inmates. (That's another story of which I've written about on here in the past).
Panda was my biggest concern as I'd thought he'd be the one who would be the most stressed by confinement. However, I didn't want to leave him with Gilligan as he tries to hump him and Gilligan has severe hip dysplasia. It was out of the question that Gilligan would be kenneled due to his medical issues. However, Panda has lots of issues too which I conveyed to the canine program staff at the prison and I was happy they did everything possible to make his time less stressful. They had enclosures in which each dog got one on one time but also went on group walks in which all the dogs were leashed. Perhaps a prison in your area also has canine programs - might be worth checking out as most of the general public may not be aware of these kinds of programs in existance,

I hope you find the right thing in which you are most comfortable with and that you feel your boys are safe. If something is not in your immediate area is it possible to take them elsewhere?

Good Luck to you
Marianne
My nephew works at a Petsmart "Hotel" in San Antonio. He loves working there. The dogs do get very well taken care of. And yes someone is there 24 hours. He has the night sift.
When we just had Frankie we used Pet Smart. I like them because they do have someone there 24 hours, and ours also has a vet.

Now that we have Mattie I can't use them because she is agressive with other dogs. We have recently found someone who stays at our house with them. She's bonded and insured. It's a great comfort.

But I agree maybe contact your vet they might have some ideas.

Have fun on your trip.

Sometimes even the vet techs like to make a bit of extra money pet sitting for clients and animals they know.
I would stroongly suggest you NOT board your dog with a day care that has a ratio of 20 to 1. Not sure if you were around a few years ago when one of the dogs on this forum got mauled, almost fatally, while at a day care with not enough supervision. His pictures were posted on the forum and they literally broke your heart. It was a LONG recovery for him.

I would rather keep my dog confined and safe a few days than run the risk of attack from other dogs. If you google certified pet sitters, you will find a list of certified pet sitters in your area. Maybe that's the best way to go.

Yes I did read about that poor dog and that thought had crossed my mind. I will board them at the same place but no day care.

Dh does not want anyone in the house he does not know so the petsitting is out.
I found a pet sitter recently and was awesome! I came home without stressed dogs. Laika who isn't a barker usually ends up wet from barking. Anyways not only was my dogs happy. All my nobs on my drawers tighten as well as my toilet fixed. They kept the place clean probably cleaner :P they clean the bedding and put it back on the bed. When I got into my bed that night it was like at a hotel she did it so nicely. I highly recommend trying to find someone to come to your home.

oh and it cost me $20 a day for both dogs and the chickens!
Wow, $20.00/day for everything she did. That's cheaper than the kennel up here and our area is underpriced. Sure makes having to leave them a pleasure.
Ours cost $20/day as well. We usually give a good tip though. Funny that I think it's okay to break my TV, computer, washer, or dryer, but God forbid my Oliver or Lucy be unhappy!
I know it I took them to a kennel it would be double that price! They stay the whole time too. Not just for a couple visits to let them out.
^^^Ours does too! Well, she is gone during the day for her regular job, but stays all night with them. She even picks up the poop as they go (we have a poop eater). Such a relief knowing they'll be well taken care of when I have to travel.
