When is a good age for top knots?

Im having trouble keeping Lily's top knots in. She either plays too rough and they fall out or Ralph wolf pulls them out  I know she can't see very well, she is constantly running into the back of my legs trying to follow me around. I don't want her to hurt herself.

Is 6 months to young for a top knot? Are there any tips or tricks that anyone can give me?

I started both of mine with top knots as soon as they had enough hair to band together--just to get them acclimated to having one in. I had to redo often because they do try to rub them out in the beginning. I found that if I ordered the bands from the pet catalog the worked better as they are smaller and hold a little tighter. As they grew and had more hair I could pick up most any and they worked well.

For some reason they now think when I comb and do top knots that they are going to get to go somewhere in the car. It is really funny--I guess I redo their hair before we go out so that they look nice-- and now they think every time we do top knots that they are going out! :D
I have been using the tiny childrens rubber bands but i'll order some from a pet catalog and see if they work better.
She doesn't rub up against anything unless I put them in too tight. Shes really good about leaving them alone.

I swear she has eyes...

And now, when she know I want to fix her piggies, she will lay her head on my chest and wait patiently while 'mom' pretties her up!!!!!!! :D
If the hair is too short to do 1 in the middle, try 2.....1 over each eye. I use the little colored rubber bands you get at Sally's.
We did lots of pigtails here as well!
Or one ponytail redone several times/day.... :?

We had "help" from the other dogs at 1st with pulling them out, but when later they were broke of the habit, things went much better. :D

Chewie's almost 5, and he loves his hair done. The other dogs butt in, so he KNOWS he is getting special attention and soaks it up!

We are going change over to pigtails for a bit to see if they stay in. So far they have stayed in for 5 mins with her playing :cheer:
I had a really hard time getting my girls to leave them in. For the longest time, they'd immediately rub thier heads on the floor or the sofa until they came out. So I tricked them.

When it was time for a trip to the park, or a walk, first they'd get collars, then top knots, then leashes and out the door. In their excitement, they would ignore that their hair was up. When they got home, I promptly took out the top knot so that they would not have a chance to undo it themselves. In time, I began top-knotting for simple things like going in the yard to train, or play ball. Eventually, the association was that fun happened when their hair went up. It was slow going, but it worked.
My Maui is not quite 14 mos and I have tried a variety of topknots with her. First I did the single one and she ALWAYS got that out, then I used some kids "detangle" spray and wet her hair on her head and the french braided it and that lasted quite awhile but after a wk or so she started having a few stray hairs fall in her eyes and it looked silly...so right now I just have her in two piggys and she seems to like that and not try to get them out...i just use little kids rubberbands to keep them in....I don't think she sees too well with her hair in her eyes as she seems to constantly run into our patio door or even the walls!!!
