I ran across this blog by a Canadian vet who brings out some valid points to consider, along with some newer info regarding risk. http://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/2011/0 ... eedfetcher |

We started giving the dogs the lepto vaccine last year. Mostly because they swim a lot and we spend time in wooded areas. I ran into an adopter from my rescue a few months ago. They live in Chicago and the dog had always been in Chicago. She contracted lepto at about 1 years old and went into kidney failure. She's fine now, but that was the first case I've heard of a city dog getting it... she was vaccinated too. |
Heather, the current vaccine doesn't cover all serovars. Belle was diagnosed by routine geriatric blood work and my vet's keen nose for something being amiss (her liver values were off in a way that suggested infection), because she was otherwise asymptomatic. We treated, she was fine. I don't vaccinate for lepto but I didn't beat myself up over it because the serovar she was exposed to wasn't one of the ones the vaccine covers anyway. That said, people have lost dogs to lepto, it's scary stuff. Kristine |
My dog sledding friend Helen (in ND) had a litter (Samoyeds) this past winter. 4 males. 3 of them went to people I know from agility, conformation, weight pull and other sports, and I've gotten to see them all periodically. Super nice litter. 1 pup went to a Samoyed family out in CO. They are about 5 months old. Last week the pup in CO died after a battle with lepto. I am hearing more and more about the upsurgance in lepto again. |
Amy said the same thing I think it was two years ago when Belle was diagnosed. Bet it goes in cycles. Kristine |
Helen also passed on to several of us a new lepto study (funded grant) via AKC's Canine Health Foundation http://www.akcchf.org/research/funded-r ... /1480.html and some info from a veterinary article from 2002 - http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/da ... rticle.pdf In addition to a dog enthusiast, Helen is also a biology professor who has taken a leave from that work to pursue her dream of running sled dogs full time. She is part of the ND Dept of Tourism, and also a TTouch Practitioner and instructor. She is also active in promoting canine cancer research. A super nice person dedicated to her dogs! |
and for your reading pleasure, an older article (from 1997) from Cornell University: http://www.news.cornell.edu/releases/Oc ... o.hrs.html This one has some good, timeless info about spread, s/s to watch for. |
Excellent article. Thanks a bunch for sharing! KB |
There has been an increase in lepto cases here in Melbourne over the past 1-2 years too!! I'll read the articles tonight when I have time thanks Dawn. |
I keep an eye on the local instances but it's rare in my area, at least in town, and the risks of the vaccine just are not worth any minimal benefit even if it did work. |
Last night Howie needed out around 2 am. He starting barking wildly, I went out to check on things. Well, there was a family of raccoons sitting in our tree about 10 feet above Howie's head. They were screeching at him. I am torn as which way to go with the vaccine. Thank you for the articles, the more information the better. peg |
