Vienna and Budapest

We are going to be travelling there this coming fall (if I can bring myself to leave Mady). Has anyone visited either place?

I am angling for Australia as our next big trip. At least we know we can get our sheepie fix down there. Plus Mim has a bet to lose so I know that at least one pint will be free!

Yes, only briefly, too briefly, in both cases, when I was in grad school in Europe. Both places deserve much more time. Gorgeous, fascinating cities.

Make sure to put the Spanish Riding School on your agenda for Vienna. And I hope you enjoy good white wines, especially, and exquisite classical music. Not necessarily in that order :-)

We are going specifically for the music. One of our favourite composers, Franz Liszt, turns 200 so there are many special concerts. I will look into the riding academy, I enjoy that kind of thing.
Yes you must see the Lipizzaner stallions. I believe they are magnificent. I've always wanted to see them.

When you go to Budapest try and visit Margaret Island(Margit Szigeten). There are numerous outdoor cafe's. It's really a beautiful place to visit.
Both places are very worthy of a lengthy visit. One point, if you go in summer, check that the hotel has air conditioning as we were rather hot in Vienna (the perspiring hot, not the other!!!) without it. Vienna is a city of music and you can get cheap standing only tickets for most of the operas if funds start running low.
The Lipizzaners should not be missed - wonderful show. We have some in Western Australia but somehow their show is not as great. In fact, Davor Javor from Croatia handled Bugaboo Puff Daddy for Doug and Michaelanne Johnson, in Europe, taking BIS, with the prize a Lipizzaner. He is a stallion and is now resident in Colorado Springs. I envy them this horse as we had one agisted on our property years ago and to watch him go through his paces in the paddock was pure magic. Even without his rider, when the mood hit him, he would start dancing.

I am soooo jealous. A lipizzaner in your own paddock, amazing!
I am so pleased that I asked about our trip, as we would not have thought of adding horses to our list of things to do. We are taking my brother with us as he will turn the big 50 and we wanted to do something fun for him. He has a non-working farm (but lives in the city). Maybe he will start hankering for retirement and raising horses! I know that David is already pestering me to get a farm and raise sheep, goats and chickens!

I don't know Kim! Something tells me that you two are going to spend at least a day or two checking out a few Komondor kennels while in Hungary - or at least David is....... What better way to spend a holiday than including dogs visits if you can't take your dog along. Ask Michele what our primary visits were on our honeymoon....

Kom photos and kennel business cards upon your return please.....

Carl, have I told you lately that you are a bad influence on David?? If I am not careful, he will come home with a Komondor puppy tucked into his bag. And maybe a second one for you!

First, if you know the dates you will be in Vienna, write off NOW for your tickets!
When Norm got out of the military we backpacked/youth hostel'd around Europe for 2 1/2 months. (I had just finished travel agent school).
Budapest is a wonderful place and very inexpensive compared to the rest of Europe! I always wanted to go back and buy a goose down comforter.............. anyway, see the palace in both places. There is a place to eat and i :lmt: the name was the Student Prince............ but don't quote me on that. Ask a Taxi driver.

The food and pastries in both places are out of this world!

I would get a Rick Steve's Europe thru the Back door book at a store. and HINT. Tear out the countries you are going to go to and take only them with you! That lessens the pounds of your luggage! And his books have wonderful places out of the way to see and do.

Oh in Vienna, besides the music and the horses see the Palace,

Have fun!!

Just once I wish we would visit somewhere with terrible food and pastries so that I could return home all skinny and fit!
