They look all rough and scaly, and the hair isn't growing there. And it's flaky, too. At first I thought it was because he was lying down on them, but it seems like it is only on one side. I am worried that it might be cancer, or that it might be mange or something like that. What should I do? |

If the skin is rough and flakey it is probably just a callus. This is caused when the dog lies on a hard surface. Soft bedding will stop further formation and the callus can be reduced with rubbing in Vit E or other creams.......better maked it edible because most dogs will just lick it off anyway. Second thought is a hygroma. This is an internal swelling resulting in a knob covered with the dog's skin and hair. Cause is the same, impact from constantly flopping down on a hard surface. When the dog starts licking, you enter into new territory, ulcers, etc. Nasty. Then there's what Jack has: pendulous callus. A soft pink (in his case) bag that hangs off his legs. For a nice discussion on elbow "decorations" and pictures go to : http://www.dogleggs.com/files/hygroma.cfm The site sells protection sleeves for dogs, but the info and pictures are good for diagnosing. |
