She has to stand with all four feet on the board and not step off it until I tell her. It's been funny to watch her learn this. It's seems to me that she's still quite shocked that I will dole out so many treats and be so happy with her when all she is doing is standing still on a plank. To start the process I did what is called "build value" for the board. This basically involved giving Tiggy a treat whenever she looked at, sniffed at, stepped on the board. The funniest thing is my siamese cat LOVES dog treats so now whenever I put the travel board out Rowdy runs over and sits on it. There's a bit of competition for who gets to be on the board. Needless to say bulk wins and Rowdy gets the boot (literally). Tiggy has mentioned her thoughts in her blog.http://tiggy-tigster.blogspot.com/2011/03/uprights-are-weird.html |

How long did it take for Ms. Tiggy to figure it out? |
Good to know! We'll have to learn contact when we re-start our Agility training. |
That is funny, as Tipup loves dog treats (heck, even their food!) as well. Thank goodness we did most of our contact board work AWAY from the cat And for the contact...having all four on isn't the best for our breed. (other breeds too) Most do 2 on 2 off (2o2o) or one rear toe on (1RTO - Linda Mecklenburg) as it lessens the pressure/impact on the shoulders/pasterns/front end when slamming to a stop in a downhill slant on the obstacle. Having 2 or 3 feet onto the level surface is easier on the body. I know Kristine has the 1RO article downloaded and can email it out.... (she sent it to me when we were learning ) Chewie ended up preferring 2o2o, but both are really good. All my BC friends that train w/ me do 1RTO and it's awesome to watch! |
Thanks Dawn. We are going to 2 on 2 off with a nose target now. It was just all four feet to build value. Already Tiggy is stepping forward for her treats as we treat on the ground in front of the board. Our instructor was just talking to me about Tiggy's contacts on Monday night she said that she doesn't think we will keep Tiggy on the contact for long as she doesnt think its good for big dog's backs, shoulders, etc. |
Mim My youngest daughter has a young GSP and teaches obedience up country at Alexandria. She is training her girl to go on lead by standing four feet on a large stump. Eyrnn is intending to do agility with her, when she matures and does not run away in class (very embarrassing for the teacher) plus she wants to do tracking (again when she matures). I recall when I did agility with my OES, Clown, we had trouble with the table at the end. He would be running so fast he would jump on the table and slide many feet off said table in his enthusiasm. He was a 27" boy, very fast at agility, but nothing to match the Borders and Shelties. I was ready last night to take Tiggy's Mum, Beatrix, to obedience at KCC Park, with Lee Cogley, but had to pick my grand-daughter up from an after school dinner as her mother was not feeling the best. Ah well, there is always next week. Beatrix was all bathed and looking pretty too. Lorraine |
Mim....We are at the same learning curve as you ~ I am learning so much from past posts, the instructor I have, my mentors (Judi, Dawn and Kristine) and YOU!!! Thanks for the posts! Heart is pretty good about slowing and pausing at the end of a contact, and surprisingly having great success in overcoming her fear of the dreaded teeter~my 'wall' is the weaves,, As the weather get nicer, I will be practicing in the back yard and hoping I can get my uncoordinated self to teach her ~IMO, teaching weaves is very challenging, I can't get my treats, legs, voice all in sync to get Heart into the first weave and quickly lure her in...out...in...out...etc.. But in the meantime, reading your posts and Twiggy blogs are very helpful AND entertaining~~~~ |
Good work Mim & Tiggy. Hmm, I think I really do like this agility thing...stand still = getting treats. Treats for handlers too, right? peg |

It's embarassing enough having Tiggy run off with me a student so I sympathise with your daughter. At the grand age of 3 Tiggy is starting to learn to focus on ME! sometimes. I am so excited that I can actually keep her focus for more than 2 seconds while there are other dogs around. Tiggy has also slid right of the end of the table. Speed plus fluffy feet are not a good combination. The table at training has a slightly rough surface so that has helped a lot but I'm not sure whether we'll always have that luxury. |
Val, Tiggy is not good at slowing or stopping, end of story. She is VERY enthusiastic about life, the universe and sheep so she is of the opinion that life is too short and to interesting to go slow. Peg I have decided that I will start journaling Tiggy's training and every tenth journal entry I get ...... CHOCOLATE! Fair is fair the dogs can't hog all the treats. |
I love the motivational chocolate idea!!! |
I can convince myself to do quite a lot of things if chocolate or wine are the end result. I just have to be careful or I could end up on the green bean diet. Hence the 10 records before I get a chocolate. |
mim, i took notice of that, after every 10. i was afraid i wouldn't recognize you when i landed my raft. p.s. i have chocolate stashed everywhere |

Tell Tiggy that Harry thinks "standing still" in agility is stupid too so why would he get treats for that when he can run? However, he does get that his mean mom gets mad at him if he doesn't do it and will not let him run any further until he does his contacts or parks his butt on the table. It is a battle of wills but his mom is starting to win more and more. The cat on the board cracked me up. And Mim..... who has time to blog when we are busy training? I need to get to mine today. |
got sheep wrote: Mim wrote: Note to self: Don't lunch with Lisa anymore! She's a dibber dobber. translation please.... It means she's blabbing about how much lunch I packed away on Sat. Maybe you say tattle tale? Blabber mouth? |

Lisa, I told Wayne to help himself to whatever he fancied too! Dawn, It would be interesting to hear your version of dibber dobber. Don't forget we Ausssie have lazy pronunciation so its dib-buh, dob-buh. Like the biginning sound of bus or butt. |
