Do I leave them alone or should I put a bit of antibotic cream (Polysporin) on them? What do you do when your dogs get a scrape on their skin? peg |

If it's not too deep or serious, I just rinse it with warm water and a gentle soap and pat dry. If it looked red, or was more serious, I might put something like polysporin on it, but mostly I just let it dry in the air and heal. |
Ouch! When Oscar gets a boo-boo, I dilute chlorhexidine flush and wipe it down with a cotton ball. (My favorite chlorhex solution, Chlorhexiderm Flush, has been discontinued, so I have been using it very sparingly.) It is anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, so it helps to keep the cooties from flourishing. I jump all over everything I find, as Oscar's autoimmune issues can cause a little cut to become a big infection. Oscar's dermatologist (stop laughing, folks ) recommended Mupirocin ointment for skin infections, not polysporin. We've used that with success as well. Laurie and Oscar |
I would go with an antibiotic ointment like polysporin or the chlorhexaderm spray also just to be on the safe side.... if it's a visible scratch or wound I'd go ahead and treat it, there may be more you never see and are probably fine but it can't hurt.... |
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm off to buy an antibiotic ointment or spray now. I discovered the one I have has an expired dated. Howie does not seemed bothered by the few sore spots, but I prefer to be safe. peg & howie |
Laurie, have you ever tried the Duoxo Chlorhexidine products? We had Bumble down to see Dr. Rosser in February... he's a professor of dermatology at MSU. He had me washing Bumbie with Douxo- Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo 3% for the sores on his skin (pyoderma) as part of the treatment. We had used the pads before and keep them on hand because they're convenient for spot treatment of minor skin problems or irritation. For small spots, I cut the pads in half or quarters.
