High liver enzymes

Rosie has high liver enzymes and after 45 days on 2 medications they have remained the same...vet says she has hepatitis as her liver and gall bladder isn't working as well as healthy dog...she is going to be 11 in May and vet says it's frequent problem as dogs age...she is putting her on Denosyl permanently to keep enzymes from getting higher. Anyone else experience this...any suggestions that might help Rosie. She also put her on a Science Hill liver diet food...altogether it will cost $100.00 per month for food and medication.

My dog, PoohBear was diagnosed with high liver enzymes also. He had an ultrasound done and found he had a liver tumor. This was in December of 2009. He is 12 years old. He has been on Hills l/d formula since then. I supplement him every day with milk thistle, also. He has done pretty well until recently, but that is due to a weakness in his back legs and has difficulty getting up. We have him started on 100mg of Deramaxx daily. He is a big sheepdog, stands 6 inches taller at the shoulder than the charts say and weighs 130 lbs. From age conversions charts he is now 93 years old in human years, but still looks like a puppy and tries to act like one, but his body won't let him. We are just trying to make the rest of his life comfortable. I find it very difficult to face he may not be with us soon.
One of ours had high liver enzymes from another cause when he was eight. With the right diet and meds he lived another three and a half years. He was comfortable and happy and perfectly normal until another cause weakened him toward the end.

We were given the option to let him go at eight (he was in the middle of an unrelated emergency surgery at the time) based on the condition of his liver. We opted to keep him, and two weeks later (and many tests) found out he had a pretty good chance.

I don't know if this helps, but there is lots they can do to help a dog's liver. I wish you both the best.
My Lucy had high liver enzymes do to old age and being on Rimadyl for so many years.
The vet had prescribed her a liver enzyme supplement which is called Zentonil Plus.
It is formulated to help restore and support hepatic function by providing the body with S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe), an essential building block in the production of antioxidants. SAMe is naturally produced in the body.
After much thought we had decided against surgery for Pooh's tumor. Half of his liver was affected according to the ultrasound. At his age and the size of the tumor and how invasive the surgery was a major deciding point. Last year he had a large sarcoma removed that was on his body. Had spent 3 days at the vet recovering and went home with drains in. Luckily that was encapcilated and none of the cancer cells had invaded surrounding tissues. 3 years ago he ruptured his ACL and had that repaired. He has been quite a trooper through all of this. Our vet had put him on Deramaxx recently since that affects the liver the least. The Hills l/d formula contains the same properties that is contained in SAMe. I really do believe between the Hills l/d and the milk thistle has kept him around us this long. It coulds nearly $200.00 a month to do this, but I can't picture withholding this from him. I will do whatever I can to make life better for him.
Rosie also had an ultrasound when the first test came in with high enzymes...just showed her gall bladder had "sludge" in it and with the yellow eyes vet decided it was hepatis due to liver. She acts great and is very active...tibetan terriers can easily live to 18-20 years...I wouldn't have known anything was wrong and was having the bloodwork checkup as she needed a dental cleaning. Vet doesn't want to give her it now because of the high liver enzymes and said yesterday she may have this condition the rest of her life. She was glad we caught it before they climbed higher.
Bailey's been on Zentonil and now Denamarin. Though her enzymes are still a bit high, it is way better than before.
She didn't like liver diet food.
Aweee... poor Rosie. I hope it doesn't climb.

I have the SD food helps a little. It helped my maltese who also had high liver enzymes as well.
