Is Tamoxifen poisonous to dogs?

Let me start by saying I'm 99.99 % sure this didn't happen, but I wanted to ask just to make sure.

So my mother told me today that she noticed her pill container had fallen off it's shelf onto the floor in the pantry. She said there were 4 Tamoxifen (20 mg) pills in there before it fell and that she only found 3. She took everything off the floor of the pantry but couldn't find the 4th pill. She also said it could've fallen anytime in the last 5 days.

Like I said, I'm almost positive that Brick didn't get at the last pill BUT, just in the off chance that he did, is Tamoxifen poisonous to dogs? Male dogs?
I called my vet but they didn't have any info. They told me to call poison control. They didn't have any info related to dogs & Tamoxifen.
I have a number for the pet poison control, but it's $35 bucks. Should I call?

I can't really find anything on-line other than they can use Tamoxifen to treat cancer in dogs.

Any info would be appreciated.

I ended up calling animal poison control.

She asked me a few questions about the drug and amount, then about Brick, put me on hold, and then came back with the answer.

The result was it shouldn't have any effect on him if he ingested it
There's only 1, 20mg tablet missing. He'd have to take 20 times that to cause issues, and then it would be just stomach upset.

The drug wouldn't have any effect with him because he has no hormones.
Great news! :go:
I'm glad they put your mind to ease!

After 3 or more days, I would have probably let it ride and been a nervous wreck for a while.
How scary :(

I didn't know the answer to that one. I'm glad they were able to let you know Brick is safe. :D
$35.00 well spent for your peace of mind. :)
I'm glad Brick will be ok if he did eat it. My two are always snarfing around in the bottom of the pantry if the door is open so I would have had dibs on one of them did eat it.

Definitely money well spent to check up on things.

I had to do that when Tiggy was little. I fell asleep on the couch with my hand bag beside me and woke up to her chewing on a paracetamol blister pack. Luckily she didn't like the taste and spit them out but I had to try to put all the cracked bits back together to estimate how much she ate then weigh her before I rang the vet to see if I needed to rush her to emergency for liver support. Luckily even my worst case estimate came in well under the amount that would have caused liver damage. :phew:

That was the beginning of a long history of Tiggy eating things she shouldn't. 8O
Just in case you didn't know this.... I was told that if you have your dog microchipped then poison control is free.... I would have also paid the $35 also..... or really whatever it would have cost, but, I did recently have Dahlia chipped, and they told me it was free to use that service as a benefit.

I'll remember that. If I ever have to call them again, I'll ask. Because they certainly didn't bring that up in the call.
You can also call your local Animal ER hospital if you have a question about dogs ingesting pills. I had to call mine once when I accidntly gave a double dose of meds and they answered my question...No fee...

But your 35 bucks has now asnwered that questin for all of us! Thank you! :clappurple:
Thank you for this information. My male husky ate 5 of my tamoxifen. Yeah I'm sure about it because he has the bottle and the pills all over his bed. I counted what's left and I'm missing 5. He's a 65 lbs dog so I think I will just watch him the next few days. :wag:

I'm glad that my thread helped. :)
That was very good of you to find out and to post the results so we can all "rest a bit easier" knowing- how is Brick and if you don't mind can you tell me how his name came about? I often wonder what decides a name!xx
