What is a letterpress studio? |
I love letterpress! And I love the illustrations. I'll be checking back for sure. Ron, Letterpress is the same concept as the wood-cut printing method or a rubber stamp (or even a potato cut stamp if you're a Martha Stewart fan). The idea is simple: you cut away all the negative space around a piece of artwork and what you are left with is only the artwork in a raised form which becomes the "printing-plate." The plate is then covered with ink and pressed into paper, leaving a mark. In this way, multiple reproductions can be made quickly which have a beautiful quality to them (thanks 22graphics.com). If you love the feel of old books, when you run your hand along the page you can feel the impression of the letters and the cotton in the paper... you'd like letterpress |
Coooool! I've been wanting to do something similar for a long time. I can't wait to see some of your work! |
Thanks WeLoveOurSheepies for the brief info- you nailed it!!! I'll be posting stuff soon. In fact, jill, I have a plate illustration of a komondor that I haven't pressed yet and of course, a sheepie. Ron - this is an example of a letterpress http://twitpic.com/4a4grb |
london wrote: Ron - this is an example of a letterpress http://twitpic.com/4a4grb That seems to be a picture of business cards. Is it a mechanical printing press? Is it a business that uses a certain type of printing press? Tell me/us about your business! |
It's a very simple and beautiful process.. This printing method became popular again in the late 2000's - It's much different than "stamping" - using 100% cotton paper, the press makes an impression into the paper creating a beautiful texture. Makes you wanna pet it all day long. I found an 1880 printing press in the smack of nowhere - it was abandoned in the garage for over 70 years -- completely rusted and covered with god knows what.... Took me about a week of elbow grease, lime & vineagar and lots of love to get it working again! Will upload more pictures as soon as I get my iphone fixed. It fatally drowned in the tub last night. siggh. angry birds + bathtub= |
So the image is a positive and impresses down into the paper embossing it? I am so excited to see this! When you're all set, please take a quick video of the press at work! |
