Yes, you can certainly do both. I haven't done CPE even though both girls are registered to run there. Just haven't had the time. But several OES people have and still do and it's by all accounts a nice way to ease into things for sure, and also a nice place to run a physically challenged dog for that matter, because you can jump your dog at much lower heights. Also, there are fun games which are great for developing handling skills, and qualifying is easier, especially at the lower levels (so more reinforcement for the handler ) If you start at level 1 the dog doesn't have to do weaves or the teeter as I recall. Great for green dogs. A friend with a rescue OES who struggles to make time in AKC - they're both physically challenged - took a break to do CPE just this weekend and they had a great time and wonderful success. So you can literaly be competing in both at the same time. Just different weekends. For the novice dog and/or handler especially I'd definitely recommend it. What kind of seminar? Kristine |
I did some CPE before we did AKC - and I'm glad we did. It is a great organization. In addition to the traditional standard and jumpers agility in AKC, they have tons of games. So you can enter up to 5 classes each day. I usually did 3 or 4. But I volunteered and worked too. AND, I got probably more out of working than I did on my actual runs. Volunteer to be a bar setter - and you get to watch every dog run and you sit right out on the floor with the people and dogs running. Its a good way to get the feel of "being out there". I know it made me feel more confident the 1st time I walked out there with my dog to compete! And I learned so much about strategies and what to do, and even more so what NOT to do. Many clubs also have punch cards for workers that are good for $$ off in entry fees in club events. Totally a good deal! Right now I don't have that much spare time for CPE - I already work every other weekend. And the CPE trials around here are just packed, as people are accumulating points for the Nationals, which are held here in Minnesota this year. You need to join the organization and register the dog. With that you get the rule book and most every thing you need to compete. My classes are totally AKC focused, and I went to my 1st CPE all by myself and winged it and did fine. |
