First time to a groomer!

As I type Howie is having his first experience with a real groomer! Sadly because of wearing the cone/collar for almost a month his ears, and neck got badly matted.

I am trying to convince myself this is a good thing being shaved right down. He is just over 11 months old and his coat is starting to change. The hair is not gray yet. This way I can stay on top of the coat and matts as the hair grows long again.

I will post an after photo. This groomer is great. She grooms for Howie's breeder's show dogs. I have full faith that she will not make Howie look too goofy. If that is possible? I can't imagine what my pup will look like without all that hair.

Do you remember when you first clipped or shaved your dog for the first time? What was your reaction? Did the dog like being without their long locks??

I want stories and photos! :excited:

This was Nigel's first puppy clip. I do not let my groomer clip his head anymore because it takes too long to grow out the topknot. He looks like a bobble head for a while...but it works for me. We get so hot here that I am comtemplating the clip for Summer soon, now that he is all grown out from last May. He is happier clipped in our Summer.
Ah! I'm sure he'll still be a total cutie at sheepiepalooza!!! :cheer:
:cow: This is ten or elleven years ago; my first and last time at the a groomer......not much to groom.
My dogs got mite. That's why I let the groomer cut off all the fur:

Aurora and Maurice was happy also without the coat;
A bit cold the first week though. :?

Maurice; People asked if I had started with a new breed,
they didn't reconnized them.

Image
Aurora; Nothing left to groom then...........looks more like a dog now -
without the fur, and less like teddybears.

And here - back to normal; and teddybears again. 8)
Howie did great at the groomers. He behaved himself. :high5:

Before photo- this was taken yesterday after a walk in the rain.

Oh a love his long coat, but it is great to see his muscles now! Howie feels like velvet.

It will be fun to watch his hair grow!

peg & handsome howie
Wow it's amazing what a difference it makes! He looks so serious in the 2nd pic, like ok, he's trim, he's fit, he's ready for business! I look forward to see another new look at sheepiepalooza!
Howie looks sleek and smooth! :D

We had trim downs twice. I actually had all the pictures and all ready to post...and the forum went down for the upgrades....

Once Chewie was shaved on his grays to get rid of his puppy coat. He had been showing and hit 18 months and still was full of puppy coat. So, we had a 1 year break from conformation and grew hair. Meanwhile, we did rally, weight pulls, dog sledding, all sorts of fun stuff!
Thankfully, while his hair was a late bloomer, his brain was not delayed :phew: ...he was busy doing stuff that needed smarts, training and teamwork.

Then we finished his CH, and I cut him down to a short puppy cut. This time I scissor trimmed him short all over and didn't really like it that short...so we have regrown a bit...gotta love hair! :cheer:
Here he is finishing his CH -

Even though I love the oeses with a lot of fur:I think the OES look lovely also without the coat.
Nice to see there mucles and construction. And like you say they feels like velvet.
 Almost no work for half a year.......it's tempting to cut it all off. :sidestep:

 And I think they are dobbelcute when they have this "bob look", half gown out:

:aww: Nice pic.....Chewie is such a charming dog.
Quincy and Oscar were both THRILLED to be shaved down. Both were hot, hot, hot, so they were very frisky after the first clip. No embarrassment, no hiding, nothing negative at all, just happy to be so much cooler.

Howie looks great! What a kissable face! :hearts:

I love the way sheepdogs change depending on the cut: from grey greyhound retriever to ....well here, muddy Koms. Somewhere in there sheepdogs do appear. Last year I contemplated shaving down Glacier Pyr but just did a small section......some areas are still bare.......... .......not the thing to do on a low thyroid ancient Pyr. Fortunately adjoinging hair is long enough to cover the bare spots. Yes, time to have the thyroid checked again.

Lovely thing about sheepdogs, it all grows back quickly and you get another chance.
When we adopted Zeke, he had a long coat.
After getting him home and attempting to brush him, I noticed a lot of mats.
He was 1 year and 3 months old when we got him and had a tough start to life, so I'm sure all that contributed to the matting.
So we decided to shave him down.
It was SO nice to see the dog under all that fur and he really enjoyed having a short hair cut. We kept him short from there on out. My ex keeps him short (1 inch or less) to this day.

I love all the photos! No matter what length the hair is, the sheepies are all cute. I prefer the puppy cut length or longer. Howie's shaved coat sure makes for a clean dog.

Mark, I love Zeke's crossed paws in the final picture. It is neat seeing all of the before and after pictures. They are all adorable.

If you go thru my photo album, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a pic of Zeke where he WASN'T crossing his paws when laying down.
He does it quite often. Don't know why.
