Small cars ad OES

I'm starting to look for a new car to replace my RAV4 SUV. I love little cars and am super excited about the new small cars from Detroit and the new Chrysler/Fiat 500. However, I'm concerned my 90+ pound OES won't like it. I think the main problem will be getting in and out of a 2-door subcompact. We don't take long trips. We just go to the park for walks or to the vet -- a 45 minute drive max.

Am I crazy? 8O
Will my OES be ticked off?
Has this worked out well for anyone out there? :plead:

Thanks!

I don't have a two door but Violet always loved to ride in my Mustang Convertible. She would always sit up in the back seat and feel the air go through her hair. 8)
Take a look at the new Chevy Cruze. It's the largest of the compact cars on the market.
I believe it has best-in-class rear seat room.
It is a 4-door, so loading the dog won't be an issue.

If you opt for the Cruze Eco, you get a 6-speed manual transmission (if you like sticks) and 42 mpg.
The regular Cruzes get a 6-spd automatic and come in at 38-40 mpg.

You need to do yourself a favor and check the Cruze out. Nice vehicle. Sat in one at the car show and was quite impressed.
We have a kia rio cinco (5 door), the dogs ride just fine in the backseat, only problem is that Tripper believes he should have the whole seat so Butch doesn't always get his fair share. Otherwise if it's just one of the dogs no problem at all. We've gone down to Milw that way, they get out to potty and stretch but back in they go.

We have a suburban but with gas prices going up steadily we will be using the small car.
Frankie and Mattie both love to ride in Troys Challenger. Not at the same time of course. Either one will lay in the back seat. It's very easy for them to get in and out of.

For one dog? You can easily put him in any car. When I had my Mini, I'd strap Clyde right in like a person and let him ride next to me and other times he liked to jump in the back and curl up on the back seat. Sometimes he waited for me to push the seat forward to get out and other times I'd just open the hatch. Whenever Owen rides in a regular car, he just jumps between the front seats and gets out one of the front doors anyway. You'll be lucky if you have a chance to get him out the right way!
Oh my goodness. You are crazy! lol

I couldnt imagine my life without my suv.

We do own a honda prelude (2 door) but its not very fun packing in 3 dogs (2-70lb and 1 oes pup) into the back of it. One dog barely fits in the back seat. They do get in and out of it perfectly fine but keep the cupholders empty cuz dogs like to jump from the back seats into the front to get out. We have lost many sodas and coffees to this.

You are very smart to think this through. I have
a Dodge Status 2 door. For our guy, it was fine
when he was a young sheepie and under 60 lbs,
as he got older it was harder for him to get in and
out. And when he recently took ill, I transported
him sitting behind the drivers seat sitting sideways
for the trip to the vet. He was too weak to get
up on the seat.

My suggestion is to go with a 4 door car if compact.
I was sorry I had not.
Cars have changed their design, the chyr. Lebaron
I once had , there was tons of room inside.

So shop carefully, and best of luck with car
shopping!

Not to hi-jack the thread, but what trim level Challenger does Troy have? SE, R/T, or SRT-8?

These cars do have a good size rear seat. A big dog would fit back there no problem.
IIRC, the front passenger seat tilts forward and moves up with a single release and then leaves lots of room to enter & exit the rear seat.
I'm with Jill - one OES is going to fit in any car out there.
Personally, I am not a fan of dogs in the front seat. We do it only in an emergency (if we are so packed in, or I'm transporting for rescue, etc and have 2 dogs who need to be separated.)

It's a hard and fast rule here that dogs only ride in the back. My previous car was a Ford Escort hatchback - bright purple too 8) . I rode around most of the time with the rear seats down, so the entire back was for the dogs. But, sometimes it had to be a "real" car and the seats were up - worked fine both ways. It is a 4 door, so easier.
Here is "the purple car" when we were at a parade for our therapy dog group. It easily hauled 2 full grown OES, a basset hound and 2 adults....

Now my son is driving it (with a min pin  )

I have an Element now. Love it.
It has the clamshell doors (suicide doors), so the main front door has to be opened before the rear one is accessed. My dogs that go tons of places with me NEVER jump in the front when the 1st door is opened. They wiggle and eagerly wait for the back door. My foster girl is in the learning process, she was doing almost perfect waiting just from all the in/outs on this trip. Several others are hit or miss - sometimes they remember to wait...a work in progress.

Here is a picture from today, actually. We were out in Milwaukee, from MN. It's a 7 hour drive, one way.
My daughter and her OES Martha, my OES Chewie, and our foster OES Bunny went out Friday, came back this afternoon.
Here's a picture daughter LeAnne took of the 3 dogs snoozing away the hours :D

Sheepdogs do cozy really well!
my 2 girls ( 75 pounds and 90 pound) ride comfortably in the back seat of my Nissan Maxima. Not a small car, but not an SUV. Maybe consider a compromise like this...?
Thanks everyone! You've been a great help.

I like the notion of getting a 4 door hatchback...easy access for the dog and relatively decent fuel efficiency. (Thanks Zahra!)

When I was looking online I found a number of suitable vehicles with even better fuel efficiency, but they're not available in the US yet.

Hopefully they'll come soon....

Thanks again!
We have a VW Beetle and a VW diesel Jetta. Oliver and Lucy prefer my beetle over the jetta any day and it has a much smaller backseat. (The convertable factor could come into play...but as long as you have windows that roll down in the back...)
We have a 4 door hatchback Subaru Impreza, plenty of room for 1-2 dogs. Also drove to the cottage for a week with the car incredibly packed with stuff, our sheepie, and 3 adults. It was fine.
Chevrolet just debuted a Cruze hatchback in Geneva last week.
While they say the hatchback variant isn't coming to the States, if enough people showed interest in it here in the States, they would produce here as well.

If not, there is always the new Ford Focus. It looks like a great small car and is available in a 4-door hatchback.
The Honda Fit is pretty amazing for a small car - seats folds down completely FLAT in the backseat -- it's big enough to transport ur ski equipments as well. Scion Xb too. I thinkkk maybe the Scion XD -- I could be wrong. they're releasing a new iQ which is supposedly to be a "smarter" version of the Smart Car.

You sound like my husband - we went car shopping last weekend and he keep saying "think London and Tony will like it?!" over and over. Honestly, I don't think they'd care as long they are going out for a ride! ;)

We looked at the new Jetta Sportswagen TDI and while my husband loved it because of the whole TDI feature- I was annoyed about the fact the middle seats does not fold down flat 100%. We're still mulling over it - I want it in Toffee :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

Hubby and I just got our Jetta TDI this year. We LOVE it! My sister has the wagon verson and loves hers as well. They are very comforable, affordable, and fuel effeciant cars. We also loved all the standard features. My bug as the same "pleather" seats and are so easy to wipe down after the furkids. True that seats won't fold down all the way...but the trunk space is amazing!!!
I have the feeling that the seats in the Jetta wagon are not being folded down correctly. I have a Passat wagon and friend with a Jetta TDI Sport Wagon and both of our seats fold 100% flat. The secret, and believe it or not many of the dealer sales people don't even know this, is you have to pull the bottom cushion up first toward the front seats and then lay the seat back down. You cargo area will then be 100% flat. I love my Passat wagon and haul my two OES, Oscar and Dudley around all the time in it.

^^^Good to know, thanks! We'll give that a try!
:D I had a Fort Focus 5 door hatchback for a few years which worked very well with Willoughby despite his 85 solid pounds. 8) He had the whole back seat with a seat belt that let him move around. I used to get waves from other drivers , pointing and laughing at us around town.

After an accident and the ensuing physio etc. plus repairs to the car (covered by my insurance as I was not at fault) I was awarded damages and bought a 4 door Honda Civic , good gas mileage and very comfortable for both of us.

After Bentley, now at the Bridge, developed severe back problems, I found a two door very awkward and decided that I would always try for a four door. So far, so good!
110 pound Quin used to fill up the back of the Chev Aveo.....

Really?! hmmmm I'll have to try it again!! We also saw the Acura Tsx wagon - heard they're going to get a TDI version next year and really liked it. but I dont know if I can wait that long and beside I want it in Toffee. We'll have to check out the Jetta again this wknd.

Thanks jcc9797 and kajochen for your inputs
Small car, OES with expensive tastes, his car (ferrari), dogs name is "Troy" I have an upright son with that name and thank goodness he has not so expensive tastes

He wanted to race the F1's in the adelaide "Grandprix" 8)

So an OES will squish into any sized car regardless. :P If it is out and about they make do with limited space :phew:
