Food and Bad Breath

How much does food influence bad breath? Clyde is healthy and eats well but, boy, his breath can get terrible. Someone suggested switching his food but I'm wondering if that would actually make a difference. It seems to agree with him in all other ways so I wouldn't want to switch unless it really would help.

I don't think food really matters ( don't know though) - I think it's his teeth. I would try brushing - and if you are doing that then maybe he has a cavity or something... I can't think of what it might be.
No, his teeth are cool. Brushing probably wouldn't hurt though!
:? Well... maybe it is diet (and tooth brushing). What kind of food are you feeding him?
They make green and black (chlorophyll and charcoal) dog biscuits that are supposed to help with bad breath.....
What does he eat? It could have something to do with that.

My dogs eat raw/natural kibble and will soon be eating completely raw. They're fed raw bones which clean their teeth and are great for breath. You could also try giving him breath treats once or twice a week. DentaBones work great.
Brushing really helps. We brush once a week and also give him dental sticks to chew on.
He only eats dry food-- ProPlan Giant Breed puppy. I give him Dentasticks a couple of times a week as well as the minty breath bones. He also gets one or 2 large Milkbones per day. He's only 7 months old so he hasn't had time to get really bad teeth yet but I think I'll try brushing them once. Maybe he just needs all the filth that he's eaten as a puppy cleaned off and he'll smell better!
Here's my completely unfounded theory with one exception, if his breath really smells bad day after day then something may be wrong, if he ate the stinkest garbage his breath would clear up in a couple of hours, maybe not his face. Are his teeth pearly white or do you see color on them. Is he his normal active self etc. Now the exception, I owned an Italian restaurant for several years, during this period I had bad breath, according to my wife that has a very sensitive nose, no matter what I did I still had bad breath, again according to my wife. Sooooo, I would ask the vet to check him over on the next visit and before that I would try switching food just in case. By the way I don't have the restaurant any more, so things are fine now.
