I like the one I have. I've had it for several years now and it's held up well with moderate use. I'd recommend them. |
We have this one: http://www.jefferspet.com/firstrax-nozt ... p/0032590/ It's nice but we got the 48" crate and it's humongous. We don't use it often except when traveling and it's like new. Also have one that's a bit cheaper which also works well as long as there's not a screen-scratcher, door-clawer or canvas chomper inside. |
I have one, and love it. When I first got it, the smell of vinyl was awful. I aired it outside for a few days, and the smell disappeared. I like that the crate folders down into a nice fabric case...looks like an artist's portfolio. It is a Petmate. peg |
I just thought I would resurrect this thread since I am looking to get a soft sided crate for Dahlia. Pros? Cons? Type? Size? Things I need to be aware of? She is almost 6 months old and not a chewer (as of yet) |
I loved ours. Unfortunately we never use ours now, but it did take lots of scratching and never damaged it. I'm sure if we used it more, it would have torn, but it still looks brand spankin new!! Yuki doesn't do well being left in crates, so I'm not sure if we'll ever use it again, but I keep it just in case. I'd get the size smaller than the 48" one Nita mentions. Ours was huge too and could fit one grown oes and a VERY BIG pup ...and some kids |
There are tons of different soft crates available, and in about as many size and color combinations as you could imagine. If you can see one 1st it's best - you can rule out the obvious cheaply made ones. Even places like Fleet Farm, larger stores like Target, Walmart, etc have them now. I have 4 different sized and brands of them, and all are just fine. The main thing to do is be by your dog and train them right off the bat when you decide to try a soft crate. Even if they are perfect in a regular crate, they get curious and may try to scratch, dig or chew in the new and different one. You want to be right there, and stop the behavior. Because once they learn they can rip or chew out, no soft crate will hold them. |
My dogs like to "lean" into the crate while they sleep. Will that cause a soft crate to tip over??? I posrted this originally back in Feb and still never got the soft crate! |

When they are laying down - not so much. But sitting and leaning - it most definitely can or will. Both Simon (basset) and Chewie have tipped theirs. Simon was humorous - we were in rally at the Waukesha show - I had Simon in his crate....I think I was either showing Chewie or doing something away from the crates. I came back and this lady says "is that your basset?" Apparently he leaned and rolled his crate a time or two...they felt sorry for him and put him back in place rightside up! Chewie has had big tips that would have resulted in going on his side more than once if I wasn't there to grab it. In fact one agility trial, he and Stephanie's Winston were counter leaning - Chewie in the crate, Winston next to it....then Winston moved....yep - tip time! Another timely grab and save! Many of them have holes/grommets for staking them for outside use.... |
