The pair is back, and rebuilding the nest. The 1st egg should be coming anytime now - usually the end of February. There is a new website streaming service, and it's interactive, so you can chat - like on skype. I logged on as mnfan5...if I'm ever on when anyone else checks in. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/decorah-eagles They also have some facts - and they said all 3 successfully fledged from last year's nest! |

Woo hoo! Nice stream, too. |

and she just laid the 1st egg about a half hour ago!! |
thanks dawn for putting that up. i luv it. my eagles put their nest where no humans can even spot it. they do however treat me with wonderful flyover visits daily. |
thanks for the reminder and the link, it is just wonderful to watch |
Thanks Dawn!! I was just thinking about this the other day!! Can't wait to watch again this year! |
Oh good! Windy tonight for her, hang on dear. |
SheepieBoss wrote: Oh good! Windy tonight for her, hang on dear. It is windy...it's 23 degrees here, maybe a little warmer there. They are a bit east and south of us. |
Just checked it out! Is that the wind that I can hear behind the buzzing noise? It looks really still in the nest. They must have chosen their spot wisely. |
Mim wrote: Just checked it out! Is that the wind that I can hear behind the buzzing noise? It looks really still in the nest. They must have chosen their spot wisely. It mostly is the wind getting picked up in the mic. You can hear traffic at times, and sometimes the babbling creek that flows quite near the tree as well. If the wind is right you can hear voices from the nearby farm and the fish hatchery across the road. I see they are having technical issues this morning. |
Feels creepy to spy on her! haha |
Well I am hooked--love it! Try to multi-task as I am working but have to admit I find myself glued to the computer screen watching the eagles! Today around 3PM the person who controls the camera came on and did a great show! He panned the area as the eagles were in the trees for a bit and gave really close ups on the eagle in the nest and of the first egg! WOW-I had goosebumps. I think he did this at this time because so many schools watch the cam just before they leave for the day. I have to say it was really spectacular and I was snapping photos of my computer screen to capture some of the images! They are a little grainy because of the phone camera but I thought you might enjoy a few. From now on I am going to keep my good camera in the office so I can use it if the opportunity arises. Their camera is so much sharper this year and they move it around more--so the show is truly fascinating--can't wait to see those little eaglets on the new camera this year! |
OH WOW!! Thanks so much for posting those photos. I've only ever watched at night so all I see is a headless eagle bunched up keeping the egg warm. Its great to see the eagles. |
Oh I just looked now its daylight but it's snowing. I hope the eagle and her egg stay warm enough. |
yes mim, they do. last year she went through being covered in snow and hail storms. tough to watch, but everybody made it through. |
2nd egg arrived tonight at 6:42 PM!! I watched all day on and off and logged on exactly at the right time! Wow! Mom is sleeping peacefully right now--check it out. There is already a video up on Youtube! |

Dawn I was just lucky to catch it--thought I would log on one more time just to check--and it happened. Here are the links to the videos part 1 &2... there is one more I think but it isn't as complete. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xhUSvITBtI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhVYxfp77vs |
the chat moderators are lame. they don't let you use CAPS and it has to be ONLY about the decorah eagles. don't even like talking about 'other' eagles. |

Yes the chat is very lame--I think that they are catering to schools and preschools and of course the home school group. At first I thought the chat would be a good thing but it is very boring--so I just full screen or half screen to block it out! Too bad--I think there could be some great discussions but the mods don't let it happen! Oh well--I am addicted to the eagle watching! |
The last several times I have logged on and chat apparently is full. When that happens, the chat side is blank...so sometimes that is nice. I am mostly OK with the mods, but what really amazes me is the totally ignorant people out there. I guess I assumed everyone knows basic bird facts and habits... |

Some people were asking if these were eagles or hawks. Either totally ignorant or causing trouble. |
Kind of makes one appreciate Mrs. J., Jill, Stacey & Val.... |

Darn you Dawn you've made me into an eagle groupie I'm now forever tuning in to the eagles and I did see both egg arrivals |
LOL - I had it on all 12 hrs while I was at work today... I just kept popping in to take peeks throughout the day. I am hoping for one more egg |
Your hopes have been answered, Momma just laid the third egg |
I saw - happened right before I left work!!! Yes, we have 3 eggs http://www.ustream.tv/channel/decorah-eagles nightcam on now....time to sleep and rest |
Now we watch and wait! 3 eggs whoo hoo! |
I just came accross the Eagles a few days ago. At the hospital I work, they have it on a bigscreen in the REHAB room. Now word has spread and I am seeing it in a lot more patient rooms. Pretty amazing! Any idea when the eggs should be hatching? |

We are in snowland here...again! It's warm though (30's), so wet heavy stuff. Very cool the hospital has it on! There are over 7000 viewers today...amazing |
got sheep wrote: jimzz2001 wrote: Very cool the hospital has it on! There are over 7000 viewers today...amazing Add 5 to that # because everytime I bring it on my computer there are 4 others looking over my shoulder.... |
I think I heard near 10, 000 the other day and I was one of them as I am everday - morning - noon - and nite |
Hatch date in a couple days!!! Here is a link to an article in the Des Moines paper. It includes a picture of Bob laying across the empty nest ( in the off season, when the eagles are gone)! http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/p ... 1103270304 There are tons of viewers now, 14,000 or so this morning. It's also nice to hear the birds chirping in the background - makes spring seem more believable I'm about 2 hours north-west of the nest, as the "eagle flies" |
got sheep wrote: I'm about 2 hours north-west of the nest, as the "eagle flies" You kill me! hahahahaha!I almost covered my monitor in coffee. Actually, I'm not sure why that struck me as so funny. But it did. THANKS! |

Actually, I'm not sure why that struck me as so funny. But it did. THANKS! You are very welcome! And on a related note.... Todd found an eagle nest near one of the lakes he fishes often. Or rather, he suspected it was a bald eagle nest, but never saw who lived there. So, late this afternoon we drove over so he could show me where the nest is. Just as we were getting close, one of them flew off the nest and arced away. The other was still sitting tall and perched - looking down at us! And yes, they are bald eagles! The nest is just 3 miles from us, so we are going back Thursday (next day off) to try and get some pictures. |
24,000+ viewers this morning! |
and 32,000+ right now. Insane - the eggs haven't even hatched yet!!! |
Still waiting and watching...can't leave! Bob is doing more than usual panning and close-ups today! |
sheepiezone wrote: Still waiting and watching...can't leave! Bob is doing more than usual panning and close-ups today! I know I keep flitting back and forth... |
there's a notice on the site saying first hatch is imminent, could happen anytime today! (138,000+ viewers!) |
and oooh, it looks cold and windy there! |
Mom is staying close and rolling the eggs often!! Probably will be a few hours yet! |
Last time I looked there was a hole in one egg but the hatching can take anywhere from 4 to 48 hours they say. |
Yep, it does take quite awhile. We had our own incubator (various fowl, not eagles!) and it takes LOTS of willpower to watch them oh-so slowly work their way out of the shell. And it was in our bedroom (another reason no dogs in our room!), so we could hear them peeping as they worked I wonder how much progress will happen overnight?? I work tomorrow, so I will keep checking in..... |
First eaglet hatched around 2 AM!! Here is a link to see it! |
Thanks for the link - I had to check it out this morning as soon as I got to work! Now I hope my time is cooperative today and I get to see more peaks at the eaglet |
got sheep wrote: Thanks for the link - I had to check it out this morning as soon as I got to work! Working again today, hope I get to see more, and maybe hatch of #2!!! |
Baby no. 2 has arrived |
jean wrote: Baby no. 2 has arrived Amazingly, I just was watching during a break at work and caught the peek of the new one. I saw the egg shell and was excited! Good timing too, as storms and wind and cold w/ snow are coming later today and into tomorrow |
There were a few tense moments this afternoon. Dad flipped eaglet #1 out of the nest bowl by accident and he didn't know what to do. Mom finally came back and resolved the situation eventually. But i was a little scary! Dad hasn't been back in awhile--I guess he figured she needed some time to 'get over it'! |
I was watching - right after it happened. Freaking out at work! And now dad just brought in a roadkill crow and a trout! Add that to the rabbit from last Sunday - smorgasbord time! And I see from the chatters that they just aired a story about these eagles and the webcam on the NBC Nightly News ......viewers are going to go thru the roof! |
I think all 100,000 plus of us where holding our breathe at that time Here's a link to the drama |

All that food must be 'Make-up' gifts for mom LOL! Yes with all the news coverage I have been fearful that the whole thing is going to crash!! Thanks for the video link Jean--it was good to watch it again knowing that the ending was a good one! |
Well it's only going to get busier. There was a story on the news and in Melbourne's biggest newspaper about the eagle cam. So there'll be lots more Aussies logging on now. |
Mim wrote: Well it's only going to get busier. There was a story on the news and in Melbourne's biggest newspaper about the eagle cam. So there'll be lots more Aussies logging on now. Really?? This has got to be Iowa's biggest claim to fame ever!! Iowa has nothing....just farm fields!! (We in Minnesota have a joke : Why does the Mississippi flow south? Because Iowa sucks!) But now EAGLES there are making the news. There are many other webcams, but this one has been going for years and the upgrade to HD this year has made it spectacular. I heard Bob (director) has some interns who are now trained to run the zoom/tilt/pan cams, so we should see lots more action |
They have had a few blackouts because of the number of viewers It's 6am (5am there) and there is already 41,000 looking in at mom sleeping peacefully and the other day there was over 150,000 viewing from all over the world . |
It amazes me how something as fierce as an eagle can look so tender when looking after the chicks. |
And now the decorah IA webcam eagles are on the msn webpage banner - as one of the 5 top editor's pick stories! http://asus.us.msn.com/?pc=ASU2 |
Mady wrote: It amazes me how something as fierce as an eagle can look so tender when looking after the chicks. I agree--she is an expert with those babies! Eaglet #1 is a real handful--it got away from Dad again today and ended up outside the nest bowl. Mom again had to solve the problem! got sheep wrote: And now the decorah IA webcam eagles are on the msn webpage banner - as one of the 5 top editor's pick stories! http://asus.us.msn.com/?pc=ASU2 It is great that so many are able to view it now--but...hope the whole thing can withstand the traffic!! |
I missed the little escapee this time...maybe a good thing....it was too scary last time. Our TV news reported this AM that the 3rd had hatched in the night...but it hasn't! Logged on at work this morning and it was still 2 babies and an egg. |
The second escape wasn't nearly as scarey as the first and the little devil got back in the nest himself with just a small boost over the top the 3rd egg has a portion of the shell sticking up so would guess it will arrive today sometime |

Maybe because I seen it and didn't have to wait for the mail , thats the best thing about being retired I can sit here all day and watch along with my cuppa |
