I haven't done it but I've seen lots of really cool fabric covered ones made on home improvement shows. They just take a big piece of wood or MDF, staple foam over the top and just pull the fabric over the top and staple in the back. You can also staple in buttons so you get that tufted look. It's something I was considering doing when we move, too. We never got a headboard because our windows are the headboard in our room setup. Here's a bunch of ideas that I was perusing myself: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/best ... 009-077135 |
Not for a platform bed. You can attach a headboard directly to the wall or attach to the platform. HGTVs site has plenty of ideas, here's one: http://www.hgtv.com/bedrooms/rustic-yet-chic-wood-headboard/index.html |
I made a rectangle on the wall with some elegant trim molding and filled the interior space with funky textured wall paper. Easy, simple, inexpensive and looks better than the covered MDF(I've used the padded MDF before and it looks great too). |
Are you thinking decorative, or one that has to be useful (are you going to lean on it, or storage/lighting)?? I like the padded ideas for useful ones. Also architectural items - salvaged doors, ironwork. Paint details, focal wall, built ins.... |
Domino magazine's book of decorating (at bookstores and anthropologie) explains this- as well as making mock headboards using wallpaper and paint.. http://www.marthastewart.com/photogalle ... tChapter=1 im sure you can easily find instructions online (instructables.com) ive always wanted to create my own headboard too-- with tufts! The book is essential for all types of home decorating.. Wish the magazine didnt discontinued- loved it Post pictures of your completed project!! Would love to see it!!!!! |
Thanks for all the suggestions! We currently have a beautiful sleigh bed...I am sad to give it up, but we really need a king size. I really like the rustic style (think Pottery Barn), so an old door would be right up my alley. I'm afraid of any fabric that I can't throw in the wash with my furkids, and I have a button eater, so those are out of the question. I love the apartment therapy site! I'll take pictures when I'm finished...still waiting on the mattress to be delivered! |
I have also seen people use a section of old wrought iron fence that you can get from a salvage house place. |
my mom found an old wooden fireplace mantle and painted it to look weathered and attached it to 2 columns she bought from lowes or someplace and it looks awesome AND has a ledge on top for decorations. |

You should go to a salvage material or restoration type of place just to get inspirations. Im obsessed with reclaimed wood- that and Tolix chairs.. They are so out of my budget right now. http://www.hgtv.com/bedrooms/12-creativ ... index.html |
^^^, I #6! I really like the old wooden door idea too. Might be just the right height for a platform bed . Maybe I'll do an entire bedroom make-over. Paint and all! |
