My dad has vertical blinds in front of a slider door. What can we use instead of vertical blinds? |

Is your door glass? Where does it go? I think a great alternative to vertical blinds are between the glass blinds. it's just neater and you don't have those ridiculous 80s flaps over everything. Even a rail system that slides a few big panels across looks good with a certain decor but that's more on the contemporary side. Sometimes even Roman shades can be appropriate for the right style long window or door. |
In my house, I have two identical sets of these external french doors, full glass with a single fly. One goes out to a second floor deck. That one doesn't require privacy, so we have lace panels gahered in the middle to form an hourglass shape on both sides. Downstairs, the other door goes out to my backyard. Actually it exits under that second floor deck, so it requires privacy. It has plastic verticals that were used when I installed them 19 years ago, so they're probably from 1985ish. My dad's condo has large glass sliders that lead to a 4th floor balcony. He requires UV protection and wants room darkening, probably for a feeling of privacy. He has more room above, but mounting anything more substantial than the blinds might be an issue as it is cinder block and metal studs construction. Thanks! |
After dealing with verticals for too long I went back to drapes. Giant step backwards. Plus I wanted privacy under the drapes. Not having a double rod for sheers, I got a tension rod and put the sheers on that. Obviously the door isn't opened that much and when it is I just pull the drapes sideways. I did need to support the tension rod in the middle with a hook from the top. Cinderblock and metal studs.......oh joy. |
I am planning to hang matchstick or bamboo shades on my windows. I'll flank them with curtains, more for dress, but use the blinds as the light control/privacy mechanism. They come in many different sizes and styles and price points and some are lined for greater light control. These are widely available. I think if I had french doors, I'd use that. They can be pulled up all the way to the top to let in light and let down for light control or privacy at night. |
I love the bamboo look, also some Roman shades, but I need something I can throw in the wash. |
I use sheers and drapes but hang them from the ceiling instead of the wall. Ikea has great and inexpensive tracks for ceiling applications. They also have a cool selection of sheer panels. |
Sliding panels which are larger than vericals are the new solution to verticals. You can get them in a variety of widths. They are very similar to solar screens but hang like verticals and stack much neater and are currently used in transitional and contemporary homes. go to http://www.budgetblinds.com |
SOOOOO, they are fatter vertical blinds? LOL Is this gonna be like necktie widths now? Every year a different width? OK, back to being serious. Is the panel the width of the door or narrower? Are they flat or textured or fluffy, or what? Thanks. |
Huh? I don't get it... http://www.budgetblinds.com/window-cove ... ry-panels/ They look like roman shades, and regular drapes on rods? |
I always liked the lace panels used on sliding doors that you mention you already have. But you say you need privacy for doors that face your backyard. Well, Ron, stop running around in your underwear an you won't care if anyone sees inside |
Underwear?? |
I get it now...Ron wow! |

I have this type of door in my living room. It is called a "concept" door. Looks like French doors but it hinges in the middle & only 1 door swings in. The other is stationary. I have a large round wooden rod at the top with "sheer" (but fancier) curtains that hang from the top of the door to the floor (custom made by me & a friend). They could be pulled to cover the door if I wanted to. But I guess living in the middle of 12 acres has benefits! |
