Little cut on the face

Hi everyone,

Just looking for a bit of advice: Mika got a cut on her face from a sharp piece of snow (sniff, evil crunchy snow :twitch: ) and we want to make sure it heals properly since it's right near her nose and mouth. What's the best thing to put on it? Rubbing alcohol (ouch!), some kind of antibacterial ointment, or perhaps something else altogether?

Thanks!

Natalie

I would skip the rubbing alcohol. Is it a deep cut? If its just superficial, use some Panalog if you have it. If not, maybe some human bacitracin ointment. Something antibacterial. Vaseline has no bacterial fighting powers. If you think its deep, she may need to go to the vet for cleaning and a stitch.

Poor baby...I was worried about my dogs eating a piece of sharp ice too. This weather stinks!
Yeah, Bacitracin or a triple antibiotic (available at walmart) if it doesn't need sutures.
I second (or is it third?) that if it's deep take her to the vet. If not deep, a little peroxide, antibacterial ointment, and keep an eye on it to make sure no infection sets in.
Even just clean it up with mild soap and water and keep it clean while it heals. If it isn't big or deep, I wouldn't even worry too much about ointments or anything because in that area, she'll probably lick it off anyway!
other than cleaning it, not much more. I'm reminded of Jack's nose.....deep tears either from another dog's bite or he got his nose caught in a fence. Thought for sure stitches required, nope, vet said keep it clean by running plain water over twice a day, that's it. Sure enough, it healed nicely. (and here I had his nose all nicely bandaged - which wasn't easy, vet was impressed)

Hair is the deciding factor. If you think hair will get into the wound and prevent healing, then it needs to be shaved away....If I'm skipping the vet, I'll just trim real close without causing another wound. Clean it up, then I do use Panalog once. Vet said sometimes these steroid creams prolong wound healing, not hasten it.
Rastus got bitten by a border collie about 2 years ago. He had a tear in his shoulder over an inch long I was sure it would have to be stitched but it wasn't very deep and the vet said no it's better to keep it clean and leave it to heal itself. According to my vet if the wound is shallow it's best to leave it open to drain if there's any fluid as that reduces the risk of infection due to a build up of serous fluid.
Good luck I hope it heals up fast. :crossed:
Another good product is neopredf (sp?) powder. It is antibiotic and dry vs gooey. I have also used this product in the ears for ear infections. Worked great. The dogs don't seem to notice it at all except for the woosh it makes coming out. You do have to get it from the vet. This is a product I keep on hand as multi purpose.
