The thing is, its not just an accident on the floor, it's on my bed?!?!?!?!?!? He always asks to go out during the day/night when he needs to, but in the morning when I am getting ready for work this happens with no request to go out. He usually cuddles with me before bed on my bed, but then sleeps on the floor, so he is allowed up there, its his bed too. Why does he choose the bed?? What should I do? (Luckily I have a great mattress cover so there has not been any major damage so far, I just have to wash the sheets and comforter) |

you mean Hank doesn't follow you into the bathroom and block the shower door while you are in the shower????? And why isn't he trying to help you dry your hair and give his opinion of your outfit for the day?????? Bella sleeps with me and the minute I am up she is up to "help me get ready" which is nice since then I can keep and I on her. Not sure that this helps with the accidents in bed but I know Bella will only stand and whine very very very quietly to let me know she needs to go out. Maybe if Hank was right with you he would have the chance to make his "mistake" in the bed. That or out the door immediately while you take your shower. |
I have the only 2 dogs I have ever met that HATE to get up in the morning. That said, after I drag them out of bed, I am supervised while I get ready. Heck, I haven't gone to the bathroom alone in my house for 10 years... I have Hank, 45lbs and hairy, Tonka 130lbs, and Harry the 12lb bunny all with me in a 9 x 5 room. It's quite crowded, and they can't stand to let me go alone.. even in the middle of the night, if I get up to go, they all come with me! I've wandered off topic- but anyway, in the morning, while I rush to get out the door on time (I also hate getting up) they eventually all lay in the hall to watch me- and sometimes Hank wanders off to the bedroom. Mostly to get under the covers in the warm spot I've just vacated, but sometimes to potty on the bed. |
This is not the smart ass answer that it's going to sound like, but can you shut the door? Clyde was getting lazy about going out at night and started going down in the middle of the night to pee in the living room. We put a gate up so he couldn't go downstairs and he hasn't peed since. For you though, if he peed in your bed, it might be a lot harder to get him to stop. Pee in the bed is there forever. If you can't gate him or close the door, you may have to get a new mattress (or a really thick comforter to hide the smell underneath) and watch him like a hawk. It sounds more behavioral than that he actually has to pee. |
My dogs go out 1st thing in the morning. And I mean 1st thing. They go before I go! Crating or confining them within 1 room while you get ready for work should do the trick too AFTER they have been out for their morning potty. If they have to "live" with it, they usually won't go in that area. I just happen to be the kind of person who would rather avoid the situation than deal with it after it happens. As for them not being "morning dogs" & not liking to get out of bed.....a new routine won't kill them. It what they will get used to. |
Oh, oops, I missed your last line about the mattress cover. Good. Did you wash the comforter with something enzymatic, like OxyClean? That should kill all the pee remnants. |
maybe he's trying to tell you thats his side of the bed!! it is annoying, it happened to me but fortunately found it in seconds and he had already been walked so no excuse. there is a great product should you need it "urine off" gets rid of smells but not the why fors. |
Maybe he is trying to tell you he is mad at you for leaving? Just like little kids do when there parents leave them and they behave badly , Maybe Hank is doing this to let you know he isn't happy about it! Traci |
Chowder did that too! Around 9/10 months. Since I was sleeping I just assumed she was awake. The third time it happened, we weren't in bed this time (luckily) I practically watched it happen and she was ASLEEP! She was peeing in her sleep. After many visits to the vets and giving them much $, there was nothing wrong with her. She hasn't done it since. |
I just remembered Tiggy peed on our duvet 3 times when she was about 6 to 9 months old. It was when she got big enough to jump up on the bed, they dogs aren't generally allowed in the bedroom so it is a special treat. She'd be super excited, jump up on the bed, sniff the duvet and squat. All 3 times I was there and yelled in horror so they were just little pees. I banned her from the bedroom for a few months and it's never happened again. She's even snoozed on the bed with me a few times more recently with no issues. |
The dog is NOT peeing in the house because he is mad you are not home. Dogs DO NOT have the ability to reason like that. They don't do things out of spite. But, if their routine has been changed, they may do things they don't ordinarily do. HOWEVER, any dog who suddenly starts to pee in different inappropriate places in the house, I would check for a UTI infection... |
