Is he the only one?? |

Frankie love love loves ice cubes. He will pull them out of coolers, try to take them from your glass. Such fun... |
No I've tried with Tiggy a few times, she's not fussed about them. |
Not here, none of mine care for them. If a cube falls on the floor they will sniff and walk away. |
This is kind of funny.... One of John's pet peeves is when I "crunch" candy-- lemon drops, rootbeer barrels... NOW Max is crunching too. He will bring his cubes into the den and lay in his bed, chomping away. I saw John rolling his eyes tonight, when Max and I both had our "treats". |
watcha need is a couple of crazy for ice cube dogs who stand at dispenser in frig door. |
Clyde loves them but when he was about 3, they started making him puke so no more cubes. The other two don't care. |

Oscar loves "cube-age" as well. Quincy was also a fan. Neither dog ever got sick. Quincy loved ice cubes so much that he started using his front paw to hit the lever on the front of the fridge so he could get them himself. Until he accidentally hit the "water" option with his huge paw and got a face full. After that, I once again became the ice dispenser. Laurie and Oscar |
When we first adopted Violet, my hubby asked me to never give her ice cubes. He said he almost choked to death as a child on one...so my girls have never had an ice cube. |
Butchy loves ice cubes, our first oes, Pache, demanded ice cubes in his water. Our second, Farley, demanded he never be given one so they are all different. Butch gets a few each evening and I will put ice cubes in his water in the summer, Tripper doesn't like them at all. |
Amazing Grace and Oliver LOVE ice! They hover by my glass while I'm drinking and won't go away until they get some. I also pull big icicles off from outside and they think they have something very special and run to their pillows to eat them. On occasion I fill a bowl and hand them out. I sure am glad I dont' have a frige with dispensers! My floor gets wet enough from them drinking and going outside. With my luck somebody would figure out how to use the dispenser and I would have an indoor pool in the kitchen. |
Abuckie wrote: Ok- so I am stupid, but what makes them puke? I assume the cold can cause an upset tummy. Both of my guys have been ice cube lovers. They've both puked from ice cubes but it hasn't been a frequent thing, so we only give 1 or maybe 2 at a time and never after a meal. |
Guest wrote: watcha need is a couple of crazy for ice cube dogs who stand at dispenser in frig door. Nope, you don't want that. About 10 years ago I purchase a new stainless steel side by side fridge with water and ice dispenser. At the time we had a Pyr and an OES, both loved ice cubes. About 3 weeks after the fridge arrived I started to notice nose prints on the door. I didn't think much about it because the dogs would play in that area frequently. It wasn't long after the nose prints I noticed standing water at the base of my brand new expensive fridge. We pulled it out and went over evey inch trying to find the leak with no luck. The water kept showing up every afternoon for a week, out of frustration I called for repair. The day before the reapair appointment I was sitting in the sunroom reading. The sunroom was behind the open french doors that allowed the boys to run in and out at will and had a clear view of the entire kitchen. I watched Ollie and Doogie run in from the back yard, through the doors and directly to the fridge, where Doogie pressed his nose to the ice dispencer paddle which to their delight, left a large helping of ice cubes on the floor for their dinning pleasure. Now I know why I had nose marks and water. Called the repair guy, canceled the appointment and found the lock for the dispenser. Case closed, for about 2 weeks. Apparently Doogie (Pyr) felt there was no need to bother the human for his favorite treat and figured out how to "nose" the lock switch. I called the repair guy and had him disable the dispenser. I can't pulled out the jug of lemonaid without my three gathered at my hip waiting for the ice to be handed out. |
What makes them puke is the coldness of the ice. It can cause tummy cramps and that will make them puke at least but can cause their stomach to turn. Like a blot type thing. My dogs love ice cubes but I limit them and don't encourage. After reading about the ice cubes and the bloat factor (Bloat in case you are not aware, Bloat is a serious condtion and can be fatal to your dog and at least, and can cause torsion requiring surgery)...I stopped giving cubes as a treat. |

Before I go to work, I grab a cup of coffee(to go) and put a few ice cubes in so I don't burn my mouth. Every time I grab the ice cubes I have to grab two extra because I have two dogs sitting there waiting. They only get one each and they have never gotten sick from it. |
Lori, don't be ! I believe I found out most of the info right here on this forum a few years ago! Mine still get ice cubes but only once in a while and I make sure they are the half filled, hollow broken ones. So still crunching and refreshing but not as thick and cold if simply swallow whole. |
I think the ice cube/bloat connection might be based upon anecdotal evidence, and a story that went viral. My vets have never found any medical evidence that's supports a conclusion that cold water or ice causes stomach cramping that leads to bloat. If I remember the story, the dog in question came out of the show ring, was given water and ice cubes, and then suffered bloat. Not sure of the dog's breed. There could have been many other known bloat factors that came into play here, including breed of dog (deep-chested), gulping air with water, or show ring exercise too close to drinking water. So while I exercise caution with Oscar about his bloat risk, I'm not so worried about the ice cubes themselves. Laurie and Oscar |
Interesting thread! Willoughby loves ice cubes and in summer time, he likes to nose an ice cube around in the grass. But if he swallows it, he gets sick. I have to watch him with snow as it has the same effect. I can't sit down with a drink that has ice in it as he immediately stands in front of me, waiting for me to fish one out for him! |
Lynda, What is in your drink? Maybe its not the ice cube he wants |
In hot weather, it could be a glass of white wine with ice cubes or rum and coke! Given our big storm today, it should be hot buttered rum but the cupboard is bare! |
