Hurricane after the floods hitting Queensland

> Queensland, after extensive flooding in the south, now faces a category 5
hurricane within its overseas tourist area in the north. Hurricane Yasi is 500
kms wide, with an eye of 70 kms, and is to hit Queensland within the next 12
hours. Evacuations have taken place. This is a much larger hurricane than that
which destroyed the capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin, Hurricane Tracey.
Innisfail, which will have the eye of the hurricane, has not long recovered from
a former hurricane, Larry. The magnitude of this Hurricane ready to hit the coast up north in the state of Queensland, is even greater then what Katrina was.

> NSW has 70 fires running at present and here in Victoria, we still have
flooding on one side of the state and fires on the other. We are waiting to hear if our farm is OK and not in the line of the fires which started yesterday with High temps. Here in Melbourne yesterday 38-39 Celcius and in other parts of Victoria over 40 celcius. So keeping fingys crossed the fires over the mountain keep going the other way and dont vere back to our farm at Jamieson, cooler day today only reaching a top of 30 so containment lines and work today by the fire authorities should see that one here under controll. :plead:

> I can't remember any time when there has been such catastrophic happenings in
Australia all at once with crazy weather, so far over summer here in Victoria a cool one and a wet one, now the Temps are rising and all the what is happening up north, Queensland is just unbeliveable.

I am worried about the people that own Brie's Brother in queensland too, since the massive flooding that happened non of us has been able to have contact with them. I am truly hoping they did not get washed away, house etc when that hit a few weeks back. :plead: I know one of them worked at the University of Queensland and that went under, will feel better when I hear from them.

My son Jarod is home, THANK GOODNESS, he is in shipping and flies to Queensland and does a stint of the ships for 8 weeks betweem Gladstone and around the top to Weipa, all where this Hurricane is bearing down. I am so gratefull he is home sweet home and not out in the ocean when the hurricane hits. All the ports have been closed so I am just gratefull his shift was up and he is home with us now in Victoria.

The next 24 hours for Queensland will be massive. :(

Everyone pray no loss of life or after the devastating floods that hit the north of that state and re-building is still on going that this massive hurricane does not wipe the rest of Queensland off the map. :plead:

That is a massive storm and I am very frightened for everyone there. I hope all have evacuated with their animals. Good luck, I'm praying for you.
I just watched all about the new storm on the news when I got home tonight. :( :(

Maybe they will be wrong. :crossed: :crossed:
Unfortunately it looks like they're not wrong.
The cyclone is still bearing down on the coast. This afternoon people were told it was too late to evacuate and that they should seek as safe a place as possible.
Lots of people with the dogs and cats trying to get them out and find somewhere to stay.
I hope there isn't loss of life, they're saying it is the worst cyclone to hit the coast in generations.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. We spoke to our relatives in Canberra last week. They echoed the most catastrophic weather they could remember too. And they are old like me
Unimaginable. Hope everybody makes it through OK :plead: Keep us posted.

Kristine
Praying and hoping there is no loss of life..and little damage. This is so frightening..plz keep us updated...thinking of all of you. :plead:
Thinking of our Aussie friends today and hoping that everyone can stay safe. :ghug:
Thinking of all Aussies and hoping for the best. :crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:

Glad Jarod is home, Lisa. I can't imagine how worried you would be if he was at sea.

Ditto....
I also saw the news and feel so badly for all the people and animals. Praying for everyone, it has been a terrible year.
My prayers too to all the people in afflicted areas; fire, flood and hurricane. This has been a awful year.
Thoughts and prayers for everyone. This is just too much.
Cyclone Yasi hit the coast as a category 5. The few reports coming in are saying that the township of Tully where Yasi made landfall is pretty much gone. There have been reports of 7 meter storm surges. :cow:

As Yasi moved inland it was downgraded to Cat 3 but still very dangerous.

We are waiting for daylight now so that the full extent of the damage can be assessed.

oh darn :( :( :(

Best wishes to all over there in the storm area, and to those with family and friends there. :ghug: :ghug:
Wow. All my thoughts and prayers are with you guys, wherever you are in Australia. This has been the worst winter (summer for you) in recent memory, all around the world it seems. I pray everyone could find shelter and be safe. :plead: :plead:
I just caught the news, oh my!! 185 mph winds and another 28 inches of rain!! :ghug:
Praying for the safety of those in harm's way. :plead:
So far there are no reports of fatalities probably due to the amount of warning and preparation people did.

But it's such a mess.

Looks like we'll being paying heaps for bananas again just like after cyclone Larry. All the banana plantations were flattened.

I'm impressed that people listened and prepared. I did worry with reports of people and pets turned away from full shelters. Sounds like they found a good place to be.
Thoughts and prayers continue.
Wow, so happy to hear you are safe Mim and Lisa. You guys are getting hit hard there this summer! Stay safe and please keep us updated!
Just an update, so far in Queensland one confirmed death, a young man of 23 died as a result of having a generator going inside with no ventilation, died of fumes.

Today small towns where Yasi made land, the army and SES are moving in, two towns virtually wiped off the map and probably more confirmed dead as they enter those towns. A canadian missing, presumed dead, on a yatch, not seen since the hurricane hit and another copule same thing, looks like there boat capsized in the tidal surge and as the hurricane hit.

In a way where Yasi made land was centered on smaller communities rather then big towns like Cairns and Townsville, even though a mess there, if the full force hit those larger areas it would of been worse.

The banana industry is wiped out, more deaths I presume will be reported when the army and SES can access those communities today. One good thing is plenty of warning as to the magnitude of what hit was given so plenty of people left those areas. :D

Here in Victoria even though where the Hurricane happened we are flooding everywhere, remenants of the Tropical Hurricane way up north in Queensland. Went for a drive this morning around our area and shops flooded and we are dry in the house as being on top of a hill, outside on the patio area was like a swimming pool this morning but thank goodness it did not seep into the house. Dog refuse to potty when I take them outside, oooooh mushy and wet momma.

Down the hill from us is Blaire reserve, a lovely park where I take the dogs for a romp, it is a lake at the moment. 8O Huge park and all underwater. The tropical type heavy rain is suppose to ease today thank goodness for us here in Victoria. After 14 years of drought we certainly have had enough rain for the time being.

In Victoria it is flooding again after all this tropical low headed down south. :twitch: Hubby is at work today, Saturday here, they got swamped and the clean up there is happening after the overnight deluge.

My dogs are not use to the big wet happening here in Victoria.  Looks like in so called summer, booties need to come out of hibernation for the woosies.

Just want to say also I hope with all the blizzards happening in the states everyone is OK too, that has also been on the news here in Australia as well and it looks bad too. :|
The Canadian yachtie has turned up safe but they still haven't found the other missing couple.

We all stayed dry and ok. The back courtyard did fill up a bit but it's drained away now. Looks like there'll be no banana treats for the dogs for quite a while.
Lisa and Mim: Thank you so much for the update. It all looks terrible. I've been through a number of hurricanes and know the distruction they can cause. My heart goes out to all of you. Take care of yourselves.
So glad that most are safe! Good news about the Canadians. Thanks Mim and Lisa for updates.
Glad to hear that most everyone came through safe. The weather is just nuts all over the place!
Wow - so much damage. Very glad to know our friends are safe.
WOw that is bad. Happy to hear you are safe. Hope all is well with the small towns hit hard. that was an incredably strong storm! we are experienced in hurricanes here in Florida. Don't like them, but none as strong as that one.
Thoughts and prayers to all affected.
