trimming hair round the eyes

Does anyone do this?

When I am training him, my puppy sometimes finds it hard to find the treat on the floor. Also, when off the lead and he wonders away, I can see him looking around for me and I have to shout him and he reacts as in "ahhh!!! there you are!!!!" and comes running over. Just a bit worried that he might wonder off too far and get lost.

I have read that your not suppose to trim the hair as it protects against the sun...

not true. you and pup will live a much happier life by trimming the eyes. i was of this belief also. then one day when standing at the garden talking to my wife watching the dogs run, blaamo :cow: , down and out was i. he hit me full bore. checked further into hair protecting eyes, hogwash. he could do everything better after trimming his eyes.
life was good again. 8)
Yep, definitely can do it.

Or use rubberbands to pull hair up. :)
I think it is a personal choice.

I gritted through the no-eyes stage::

It did not take too long for her hair to grow long enough for piggies and ponies:::

hehe...lovely! but i don't think my rocky would be too impressed with a flowery pony tail! maybe a rambo style head band though...:D

I agree... it can be a safety issue. Trim it or keep it put up in
a topknot or two (or three :D)... or both.

Mady is at the terrible stage right now, where the hair is long enough to be in her eyes, but not quite long enough to be caught by the topknot. She should have been past this stage months ago but we had an unfortunate groomer nose shaving incident in August. She has 2 pony-tails right now because they are working better than a single knot. Hopefully she'll be past this stage in another month or two.
I trimmed out Jack's top knot and reduced the hair around his face and especially up top. It's still long enough to stand up giving the nice round top but now he has full vision back. Sometimes with the top knot I wouldn't get enough up on the sides and he'd have tunnel vision.

During the inbetween stages I was wondering if mousse and then spike the hairs would work :D  Maybe a little Dippty Doo?
So you all leave the hair in front of there eyes that is growing off of the snout? You let that grow out and not cut it? I leave the hair on top of the head and on the sides but I was trimming the hair right in front of the eyes. It is like a fan infront of the eyes? :lmt:
Traci :lmt:
It does have that fan look as it starts growing, but then it gets long enough and lays down.

I do one little trim - it's something I saw done by another OES friend on her bitch when we were showing.
She trimmed a narrow little line straight across between the inner corners of the eyes. Very narrow, maybe 3/8 inch wide at the most. I was scared to try it (as we were showing and not wanting to screw it up! 8O ), so she volunteered and did it on Chewie for me. Now I just maintain it. (like for over 2 years!)

Any hair above the line goes in the topknot(s), anything below it hangs down.
The hair gets trimmed as short as you can make it, almost like it was done w/ a clipper. I use my straight scissors or my thinning shears - both work.
You do need a dog that's absolutely steady during grooming to do this though 8)
Pull your hair in front of your eyes, can you see?

Its an old myth that the sun will hurt the eyes. The dog needs to see. Mine are in a puppy cut and the hair is trimmed around the eyes.

I was trying to let them grow out a little this winter(failed) but I kept the hair around the eyes trimmed. If it got too long and blocked their vision, it drove me nuts.
i trim the bridge of the nose too.
when his hair is down his a danger to himself

but theres many ways of keeping it up

but you can use bobbles too

I like the Conan style combover...
 I love all of the pictures everyone has posted. I can't wait for my daughter to get home so she can see them. Sometimes we just sit and look up videos or pics of OES's Love them . You should get a frame and put those up. Garanteed to make you smile when you look at them! :yay: :excited:
