My sheepie licks a bit, but we've never seen a hairball. My first guy started to lick his front legs alot when he got arthritis, and he never got a hairball that I know of. I wonder if the licking is triggered by an upset tummy. I've seen my dogs start to lick when they aren't feeling so well. What kind of dog food are you giving? |
That much licking might be an obsessive condition......or allergies? For obsessive, time for more dog stuff; walks, playing, obedience, playing, walks, etc. Getting the dog back into calm dog status might help. Puking up hair balls makes me think tender tummy issues.....and the licking might go along with allergies. Jack licks and sucks his hair, because he doesn't like it. He likes short hair. |
One thing to keep in mind is that if the hair is being thrown up that is a good thing. Hair cannot be digested, either by dogs, cats or humans. A number of years ago we visited the Walter Reed Hospital Medical Museum in the D.C. area and one of the exhibits was a softball size mass that had been removed from a young girl many years ago. The story about it was the young girl would take one hair at a time, twill it around her finger and then actually eat it. Over the course of many years the "mass" of her own hair built up and caused severe stomach pain. Doctors operated expecting to find a posssible appendix problem and instead removed the wad of hair which was causing the blockage. YUCK! |
Ewww!!! Double yuk! |
