I have a 5 and half month old OES puppy was just wondering how much exercise should he be having a day as I am aware of over walking. Any advice grateful Thanks Teapot |

Good question! |
Thanks I just don't want to over do it |
A 5.5 month old is so much fun! I bet you are in love! As far as exercise goes, I'd avoid stairs and anything with a lot of hard impact (taking him running for example) as his bones aren't hard yet. Playing in the back-yard, play dates with other puppies, walks, and mental stimulation until he wears out should be okay. Your puppy will let you know when he's tired, just look for the signs and don't push him to do more when he is tired. Pictures please! |

Any advice grateful Thanks Teapot I also think this is a good question because I had never heard this discussed before I got my OES. We didn't walk her much at 5 months, but we did let her run in our large fenced backyard and I kicked a ball for her to "herd" several times a day. I was under the impression that a lot of exercise was a good thing, but now I feel like it may have been too much. She has been limping off and on and may have Osteochondritis Dissecans or some other injury to her right shoulder. It could be genetic or it could be an injury from too much impact exercise during the early growth period. We just happen to have a dog that loves to run. She runs back and forth in the yard like a maniac, chasing birds, squirrels, etc. The only way we can stop her is by keeping her leashed most of the time, which is what we're doing now to try to avoid more injury to the shoulder. It's pretty hard to keep a dog from running around, so I'm not sure there's anything we could have done differently. I'm going to be discussing this with the vet this week (when my dog gets her X-rays) to find out if the running around contributed to the shoulder problem. So my answer to this question is I don't know, but I'm going to find out. |

I am so worried about walking to much but also the amount of energy my puppy has I feel he needs more exercise than we give him. Hope you sort it out. |
