My sheepie puppy has just gotten over mange. So if I were you I would get the dog to the vet ASAP. We were told by one vet it was food allergies and when it got worse. We took him to a new vet and mange was diagnosed. He was dipped a couple of times and is OK now. Good luck. |
Hi,
Here's another suggestion if it's not mange...might be warts. My Shaggy's body is covered with them. Didn't have them when she was young but the vet said it's common for the older dogs to get them. I think the majority of Sheepie owners wouldn't ever see them however with all that hair. Shaggy's warts "weep" if she rubs too hard against something or has been in play with my other dog, also a Lab. The end result is what looks like scabs on her body. In another forum I wrote about having Shaggy shaved this summer so as the vet could get a better look at all her lumps and warts. She's now 15, so at her age it's important. Anyway just a suggestion as to what it could possibly be. Let us know what it turns out to be and good luck. |
My shih-tzu has a thick, almost vertical "scab" or so it seems on his lower back. We first thought it was a tick, and tried burning it off, and it grew back. The only problem he seems to have with it is that it itches. It is approximately a quarter of an inch tall, and an eighth of an inch wide. I have no idea what it could be, and i have looked up skin disorders online and cant seem to find it. I also have no idea what this could be. |
Panda has gotten those scabs too....at first I thought I had nicked her while grooming....but they werent red blood scabs, just white thick scabs...I tend to think its ingrown hairs....Ive noticed 3 on her...I pick them off...ewwwwww....and then they seem to be fine...I have no idea what they are. They arent big, just thick...and I know she doesnt have the mange.....If she has one the next time I go to the vet Ill ask...but she seems to be fine otherwise.... |
My Mom's Shi Tzu had skin allergies that caused scabs like that. She got them from scratching the iritated skin. She'd get under the bed and scratch her backside on the rails....anything to alleviate the itching. She had to be put on medication - sorry don't remember what it was. I'd see a vet, if I were you, just to be safe. |
eww! yuck!! you people are brave. |
Benny had a rather large scab on his back once where his tail meets his body. The vet shaved the area and cleaned it well. It is believed that he has allergies. He was put of antibiotics because it looked a little infected and he was given a cortisone injection to relieve the itch and was also put on an antihistamine. He has since had several small scabs I just keep a close eye on them and try to keep them clean. And to keep him from itching I give him benadryl.
Hope everything works out for you! |
Size wasn't mentioned but last week Tasker was at the Vet and I asked about a thick scab on his head, about 1/2 inch thick maybe 3/4- 1 inch in diameter. The Vet said it could be a bug bit he scratched or a bump he'd irritated by itching. He said to wash it daily with betadine, which we've been doing and it's looking better. |
Hi, I have a 7 months old puppy, wired hair terrier and pit bull mix, he has developed some scabs toward the back of his rear, and constantly itches them. He has quite a few in fact, he does have hair loss here and there, even on his head..Can you tell me what this may be? It is not oozing, just scabs that make him itch.
Thank you~ |
It could be allergies. I'd take him to the vet to have him checked out because he/she should be able to just look at it and tell you what's going on. |

Hi Thanks I did, he had mange...weird...didn't think it was possible but of course, it was my first time seeing it..He is doing better ..yayyyy |
Good, I'm glad to hear he's getting better. It's good that you caught it when you did. |
Yes us too. He started looking funny there for a while, his hair is growing back so much better now...
I have a question also about our puppy. He loves his run and walks, and whenever we aren't able to do this every single day because of weather especially, what do you all suggest to keep him from being soo bored. In fact, he was being so destructive just recently and it only happens when he doesn't get out and go for his walks...I have bought toys, rubber bones to chew with a treat in it that he can keep busy with, but for some unapparent reason he leaves it alone for awhile, then just does some outrageous things...He chewed a electrical cord that was meant for the pool..now it's ruined of course, but just glad it wasn't plugged in during that time.. He will do something that he never touched before until now...I am not sure what to do with this kind of behavior... |
That's hard and potentially dangerous for him and for you. Is he crate-trained? That's the easiest way to keep him safe. For indoor fun, I like playing hide and seek with Maggie's toys. I hide them and she finds them -- just one at a time. You can also do it with people. I am sure others will have more ideas. |
I know it's boredom for him. He wants every opportunity to keep on playing, but we both work, and it's hard for us to know what to do. He is crate trained yes, but then I feel so bad keeping him in there all day long until we get home from work...this lady in our neighborhood is wanting him in fact, and we are thinking about it now. She is a stay-at-home mom, and she has another dog she walks in our neighborhood. She fell in love with our dog, and I am thinking of his safety, and his happiness now...decisions decisions now... |
