I feed Tonks and Luna Acana dry dog food, and have been VERY happy on it. Yesterday, I scooped the last out of the bottom of the container at breakfast, and made a mental note to get more from the store. I SHOULD have made a mental note that the store was closed on Mondays. So after going there and back, I searched the cupboards, remembering that I had some bags of sample food from an event we'd done. I fed the girls the samples; one at dinner last night and the other at breakfast this morning, and they licked the bottom of their bowls-- not a typical occurrence in this house! Might just be because they were new and different, but I was wondering what the folks there think of CALIFORNIA NATURAL and NATURAL BALANCE? Switching so rapidly to a new food, I braced myself for a night of gassy dogs, and maybe worse, and never had any problems. Does anyone here feed these two foods, and if so, what varieties and what do you think of them? Thanks; Allison |

All my four dogs have been on Natural Balance's Grain Free Sweet Potatoes and Bison (Limited Ingredient) for about 2 months. They all like it very much. Their poo is nice and firm. No gas problem. Kahlua's fur has been improving a lot but then again, she is recovering from sarcoptic mange and I have also been giving her Missing link, Grizzly Salmon Oil, and two other supplements (forgot the name) that I got from a dog show for growing fur and better digestion. So the huge improvement is not strictly because of the food. Kahlua has started growing back the fur at the affected area and her overall fur condition has improved a lot. Petco is running a sale on Natural Balance food. I grabbed 4 bags of 28 pounds last weekend. Amazon also carries this. I like getting it from Amazon because I have free 2 day shipping and I like the idea of not having to haul the food from the pet store. |
I have used the California Natural. The one I fed was the Lamb and Rice Puppy. http://www.californianaturalpet.com/pro ... el=ga&id=4 I used it in a non traditional way though It was back when we were showing in conformation when Chewie was younger, and I was not having any luck getting weight put on him. I went on a mission to the store and read labels. I was looking for the most calorie-rich food I could find. The rationale was that for every cup of food he ate, I wanted to get the most calories into him as possible! The CN Lamb and Rice puppy was the highest, so I started feeding it. I did mix it though - half/half with whatever food the rest were on. (He wasn't a puppy - he was a young adult over a year old). I rotate foods, so he got half whatever the rotation food was, half the CN puppy. It worked very well. He got it as his (partial)food for over a year - almost 2 years. We had no issues at all, and I would do it again if I needed to just the same way. The availability from the manufacturer was good too - never had problems with it being out of stock. |
Thanks for that info Dawn-- I definitely do not need the highest calorie food out there. Luna is already overweight and headed for a diet. Tonks could stand to put some weight on, but she's in no danger of starving, so I may avoid the California Natural. I KNEW you guys would have good feed back for me! |
Oscar ate Natural Balance Venison/Brown Rice until they recalled it back in 2008 (?). This was the food that turned Oscar's tummy around and caused him to thrive. After the recall, we switched to Nature's Recipe Venison/Rice as an alternative, intending to return to the Natural Balance when it came back onto the market, as I feel the NB is a better quality product. However, NB discontinued the Venison/Brown Rice and came back with Venison/Sweet Potato, which did not agree with Oscar's delicate system. I think Natural Balance is a good quality food, and I would go back to it in a second if they offered a Venison and Rice product. Laurie and Oscar |

Allison - I fed the PUPPY food because it was high calorie. They have normal food |
We used California Natural for a long time because it was on the cheaper end of the higher quality foods. However, as soon as I learned Procter and Gamble bought Natura, which makes CN, Innova and Evo I immediately switched. |

Lucy was on the sweet potatoe and herring, but I switched as well. Just a side note, I know it hasn't even been mentioned, but I would NEVER use Blue Buffalo. |
I am supplementing people food using California Natural on Matilda who seems to have a sensitive stomach...Others such as Evo and Merrick were seemingly too rich for her. She is doing well on it but I plan to move more towards all my own home-made dog food following Dr. Pitcairn's book as recommended by "The Whole Dog Journal." Given the comments about P &G buying out these companies and more and more "stuff" coming out about pet food companies, I've decided to just make my own. It's probably going to be about the same cost as if I bought the high end stuff and it's fun. And Matilda is SOOOO excited while I make it and so grateful. Dr. Pitcairn has easy recipes to follow and ingredients that are easy to get. Anybody else try this? |
