How old is Mady? Don't forget that pups sleep the vast majority of the day. In fact, I think most dogs sleep a fair bit, even the high energy ones like to chill out!! I think Tilly sleeps most of the day when I'm at work. When I get home at night, and she is inside with me, she'll eventually just curl up on the floor and sleep most of the night too. So in other words, I think Mady is normal... |
She is almost 15 months now. |
All the stuff I've read says that no one is really sure how much sleep dogs should get but that at mimimum its 12-14 hours a day and possibly more for the bigger breeds. They also said as long as you dog is eating well, a good weight and happy to be active with you or others dogs then however much they sleep is how much they need. Not terribly helpful I know but it sounds like Mady is well. |
We need one of those pregnancy books for dogs: 'What to expect when you are expecting' 'The first year' 'The next four years' etc. So many basic things I don't know. I guess you are right, though, Mim, in that Mady's health is solid, she has no 'I am bored' destructive behaviours so it must be ok. I just feel guilty that no one is home with her during the weekdays, but I should be grateful that I don't have a commute to cut into my time with her, and that I do get her out for that hour at lunch. Need to win the lottery, then all will be well. 46 million tax free dollars this Saturday... |
Izzie is older (almost 6). Melissa works from home 1 day a week and Izzie sleeps most of the day. They do a 20 minute walk first thing in the morning, and then an hour walk/wander at lunch. Other than that, Izzie happily naps the day away. It sounds to me that even with Mady being younger and more energetic she is getting plenty of exercise and not too much sleep. I always wonder if daytime sleep is the same as nighttime sleep for dogs. Is it as deep? Or are they more often partially "awake" and keeping an eye on things. |
I'm convinced Mady only sleeps deeply when either a) we're not home or b) we're in bed. Any other time if we're home and not in bed, she can definitely snooze and look sound asleep on her back or side, but she's up in an instant if we make a move out of whatever room we're in (she is of course, always at our feet). I think this is one of the reasons if we're up late, she'll ask us to go to bed, so she can be "off-duty" and sleep properly. |
I was thinking about sleep this past weekend. And the guilt factor was weighing on my mind. Howie is almost 10 months old. Weekdays, we play in the yard in the morning. As soon as I come home at 4:00pm we are out the door and gone. He walks on leash for 30 -45 minutes then plays at the dog park for another 10- 30 mins. depending on who is there. Weekends it is very different. We barely get out of bed and he is tugging on his leash to go out to the dog park. We have a great group we meet up with at 9:15 Sat & Sun mornings. Then we run errands and Howie is often in the car, and we do house work and Howie is always under foot and , and, and, he never rests on weekends. Last Saturday Mark & I were eating supper and Howie was sitting off to the side doing the head-bob he looked so tired. Thanks Mim, changes in health and behavior are good indicators for amount of sleep or exercise. peg |

Izzie has always done this too She will look at us, then look at the stairs (to the bedrooms)...look at us and then look at the stairs look at us and then look at the stairs... Or she will go stand by the landing to the stairs that go up and just STARE at us Once she gave up on us and just went up to bed herself |
Aaawww She is tired and confused you aren't as well. At least she puts herself to bed. Dogs are opportunists when it comes to sleeping. They sleep when they are tired, of course, be it night or middle of the day, or middle of a walk...say with a puppy. They also sleep when there's no activity to keep them amused....it's a lighter sleep....boredom sleep.....more like naps with frequent wakeups. I'm thinking the vet in the paper once printed the average house dog with working parents will sleep up to 18 hours a day. Another reason to keep the dog active when you are with them. Otherwise they turn into slugs. |
I read somewhere that dogs are the least stressed if they sleep 12 to 14 hours a day. That's an average. Some dogs need more, some less. I feel my dogs don't really sleep well until we are all in the house at night. Yes, they sleep during the day, but I'm not sure if its a good sleep. I think its sort of a sleep while watching out for bad guys type sleep! Once everyone is home and we are all tucked in for the night, they sleep like logs...Sounds to me your dog is getting enough exercise and enough sleep. Don't worry. |
I would venture to say Patch sleeps 20 hours a day - most of the day and all night. We spend a lot of time at the dog park when weather permits and she then probably sleeps another few hours because of exhausion. She does get exercise when she runs in her sleep dreaming about chasing the dangerous wildlife of squirrels and birds. She loves company so is all happy sitting near them asking to be petted, but eventually goes to sleep. I read once where a contented dog sleeps the majority of the day; Patch is a very happy contented girl, so I would think she sleeps soundly. Does anyone ever dream about trading places with their happily sleeping dogs every once in awhile just to get some rest from the craziness of life? |
Maddy sounds like a very normal dog. We now have our first OES (also from Amber) who is 16 wks., but having had other medium sized dogs most of my life I have realized that they doze most of the day, just keeping an eye on the household. Our last girl used to position herself at the top of the stairs so she could monitor the upstairs, downstairs and front door. As I moved around the house, she would relocate and snooze, always happy to particiapte in trips in and out of the house, cuddles etc. Regarding your guilt, that is a mother/father thing. Have you considered Doggy Daycare? Our local kennel provides day care for working dog owners. Even though I don't work, our pup has been going a couple of times a week to socialize with other dogs and she absolutely loves it. She can't get out of the car fast enough and here is no looking over her shoulder to pine for Mom. There are up to 3 other pups her age and she loves them. In fact all the dogs play well together. I am a friend of the owner and have stayed to watch their interactions. They have play times and rest times, its quite fun to watch them. Anyway, thats my 2 cents. Nancy |
