I would like to know if anyone knows something about any kind of special sensitivity OES would have using Panacure ? My OES puppy has Giardia and the breeder's vets put him on Metronidazole, which didn't work. So my vet put him on Panacure and the breeder tells us that Panacure is really dangerous for seizures (and other problems) due to a OES higher sensitivity to meds. But I read everywhere Panacure is safe, asked two different vets who told me Panacure is the only way to get rid of thw worms, Metronidazole seems to never work for Giardia...And that Panacure is considered sage enough to be used on pregnant bitches so it shouldn't cause any problems, even for OES. He is at day 3 of 5 days of treatment and didn't notice anything different on my dog except that he has difficulty sleeping at night. It may be a reaction to the med but I really want to get rid of the worms and sleeping difficulty isn't really that big of a problem, at least for the moment.... So anyone ever had a bad experience with Panacure ?? or good experience ?? |

Izzie has taken panacur several times with no bad side-effects. Giardia never really goes away and panacur is the only way to treat an outbreak. Nothing else I have tried works. |
I think it really depends on the individual dog's sensitivity to a medication. We've never had any problems with Panacur. Quote: Giardia never really goes away and panacur is the only way to treat an outbreak. Nothing else I have tried works. Here too... we had something that only showed high levels of bacteria. Metronidazole didn't cure it but Panacur did. Two of mine have had allergic reactions to Metronidazole- http://oesusa.com/Metronidazole.jpg . There are also a couple other meds that a couple of mine have had adverse reactions to. Many dogs do very well on certain meds, others just can't tolerate them. |
Dogs are just like humans. What works or is fine for one doesn't necessarily work or agree with another. For the most part it is just trial and error. It sounds like he is doing alright on it. The not sleeping could also just be personality (wants to play or not sleep) and not medical. |
I'll go forward with the treatment since he looks ok with it ! I was just worried the way the breeder reacted when she heard the Panacure treatment ! She's been with OES for like 30 years so I felt like she must know her dogs ! But the vets plus internet were on the Panacure side ! Who to trust !!! loll Anyway, can't be that bad ! Thank you for your answers ! |
Wonder if the breeder has it confused with ivermectin? |

And if you are concerned about the ivermectin risk, please do the MDR1 test. It's a very easy DNA test. You contact Washington State University, they send you the kit. You do the oral swab and send it back in with $70. Then you find out if your dog is at risk for potentially fatal reactions with ivermectin and some other drugs. The herding breeds are the ones who are genetically carriers and affected Here's the link : http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/test.aspx |
