Sassy

Today we sent Sassy to the Bridge.

Sassy was our grouchy rescue girl, the one dog foster who never left. She had some not-so-good qualities but lots of endearing ones and we lived together in semi-harmony for four years.

Recently, Sassy's deformed body began to fail. Her joints were stiff and her spine was fusing. She'd lose control of bowels and bladder because she simply had no feeling in that part of her body. Worst of all, she'd lost the simple joy of living. She exhibited symptoms of dementia, she had night and day mixed up and during her night-time travels she'd undoubtedly leave a "present" for us on the floor. She seemed depressed and lost the sparkle in her eyes. She would fall and any attempt to help her up would be repaid with a serious bite. That was one behavior she had when she came to us that we could never change. She wasn't happy and her body was failing. We had to do something to help her.

Run free at the Bridge, sweet Sassy. I'm sure you'll find your friend Lexis, who crossed just last week. May you both catch those rabbits and squirrels who taunted you so. :hearts:

So special that you would help Sassy...I'm sure it was quite difficult at time but I am sure there were many great moments...just think, she can play and be happy once again! Thank you and all those that work with difficult animals.
Nita,
Good for you for opening your heart & home to Sassy. She was a pretty girl.
Even though Sassy was a challenge, I am sure she will be missed.

I'm sorry for your loss of Sassy, Nita. We fall so hard for those that have special challenges.

Sad and sweetly ironic that after so long in semi-harmony there will be missing music without her.

:ghug:
I am sorry to hear about Sassy's passing. :ghug:
You are a very special person for giving her the home and care she needed, and she was very fortunate to have a friend like until her end. My heart goes out to you and your family. :ghug:
Nita: I think you said it all. Sometimes the difficult ones find just the right person to spend the last years of their life with. :hearts: :hearts: :ghug:
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Nita, I am really sorry about Sassy.

Take comfort in knowing that not only did you give her your love when you opened your home but you also gave her your love by letting her go when it was time.

She was lucky to have you in her life. May your sweet memories of her sustain you during this difficult time.

Oh Nita, so sorry to hear about Sassy - how kind of you to keep her despite her difficulties. She was one lucky girl to have found you.
You offered your home and heart to a damaged girl. She was able to undo some of the damage and enjoy herself, but physical pain brought back the bad times. I'm happy she was able to live outside the dark cloud for awhile, thank you for giving her happiness.

I'm sorry. :(
So sorry for your loss. :ghug: :ghug:
:ghug: Nita, So Sorry for the loss of Sassy. You helped her to have the best possible life she could embrace. Hugs to you and your family during this time. :ghug:
Sorry to hear of your loss of Sassy.
She looked happy in the photo you posted. It was so good of you to give her a loving home and to know when she needed to go and run free.
 I am so sorry for your loss.
:hearts: Sassy will always stay alive in your hearts! :ghug:
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Sassy. RIP sweet sheepie girl.
Tears,
Nita, I'm sorry for your loss of Sassy. I liked the way you referred to your lives as "semi-harmony." Sometimes that's o.k.--doesn't have to be complete. Sassy knew she was loved and taken care of and that's the important thing.

I bet Sassy is visiting with my mom right now.
I am sorry for your loss, Sassy sounds like a dog who had trouble finding a home that would love her, until she found yours. You gave her that love every dog deserves. :ghug:
I'm sorry. It sucks no matter what the circumstances.
Sassy was well named  and I bet she is smiling now, just like in that great picture!

You gave a tough girl to love the love she needed, even at the end. :ghug: :ghug:
Thanks, everyone. :ghug:

I woke up during the night thinking I heard her collar tags rattling in the kitchen. That was always a signal that she'd probably had an accident on the way to the door. Later during the night I started to get up and touched the floor with my toe to be sure I wasn't going to step on her. Yes, it's going to take awhile. It's surprising how such a cantankerous dog could get under our skin the way she did.

I really appreciate the nice comments and words of support. You guys are the best! :hearts:
I think sometimes the harder ones are the ones that get into our hearts the most. You gave her several good years and for that I'm sure she is grateful. So sorry for your loss.
so sorry for your loss but she had some good years cause of you
RIP Sassy. Thank you for loving her in spite of her problems...
So sorry for your loss. :ghug: :ghug:
Nita, so sorry to hear about Sassy. She was lucky to have landed with you, and to have spent her final years receiving the love and care she deserved, including knowing when to let her go.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug: Run free sassy thinking of you all Nita. :ghug:
I'm so sorry for your loss. There's something about the "sassy" ones that really get to me, so it's not surprising to me that she wiggled her way into your heart. Hugs to you and your family.
big hugs to you and your family, soo sorry for your loss, big fuzzy hugs.
So very sorry for your loss. Thanks to you Sassy had a loving home. Having just helped my Max cross the Bridge, I am feeling your sorrow.

Hugs and tears.
:ghug:
I know it was a difficult decision for you.
You gave her 4 wonderful years.

I found the picture of her from when you took her into rescue.
You did good by your Sassy girl, Nita. :hearts:

Nita, I'm just catching up on the forum, while we're on vacation. I'm so sorry for your loss of Sassy. She was a challenging girl, but you rose to the challenge and gave her 4 of her best years. For that, I am in awe of you. Many people would have given up on her long ago, but you saw the good in her. Thank you.

Hugs as you go thru this difficult grieving time.
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
So sorry to hear about the loss of Sassy, she was such a pretty girl. I'm sure she was so appreciative to be in such a loving home. Big hugs to Nelson.
Thinking of you, Nita. :ghug:
Thank goodness Sassy had you to love her and to let her leave .. with dignity. :hearts:
What a beautiful picture of a happy sheepie girl! I am so glad you found each other and that you were there to help her pass peacefully. My heart goes out to you for your loss. :ghug:
Thanks for posting the additional pictures, Jaci. The first one was the night I brought her home from the shelter. It was the one and only time she let me shave her down without being muzzled. Well, it wasn't totally without incident...

We miss many things about Sassy that we never even imagined. I'm not really sure if Nelson misses her or not. She mostly just bossed him around but also was the one who demanded meals and treats so that always worked in Nelson's favor, too. He seems to be a lot more clingy lately, though.

Thanks again for everyone's kind thoughts and words. They've been a great help. :ghug:
I just saw this: I am so sorry to read about Sassy. You gave her the best life she could have had. It is so hard to let them go, no matter what. Mine were especially clingy for a while, too. We couldn't tell if it was for their loss or ours, but everyone adjusted after a while. Many hugs to you.
So sorry to hear about Sassy. Nelson probably is missing her. You gave her a wonderful home for four years.
So Sorry Nita!!! She safe now at rainbow bridge,
Hugs :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
When I think of Sassy, I think of the song - I'm gonna make you love me.

Why do those with attitude and challenges tug at our heartstrings so much? I remember that photo of your girl when your brought her home. The most recent one - she is smiling as she knew she was living the good life. She was blessed to have you as her mom and you were blessed to have her in her life. it was a win/win situation!

I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. God speed Sassy.

Marianne
