New puppy.........old soul???

Hi! I just picked my baby boy up from the airport yesterday at noon. He had been flying and crated since 8am the DAY BEFORE (although they did kennel him for the night in Detroit). Despite his traumatic journey, when I picked him up from airport, he was so calm, happy and didn't make a peep the whole ride home............just licked my fingers, wagged his tail and ate a treat! He has been such an angel!!!! Is totally potty trained, taught him "paw", "sit" and "drop it" in about 20 minutes. He tried to follow me upstairs once, I said "No" and "Stay" and he sat there until I came down, and never tried to go up again!!! Last night was his first night at my home and away from his mom, I went to bed and put him in his area at 11pm, not a peep out of him all night, no accidents, and when I snuck down at 6am, he was just chewing away quietly on his toy. Has not barked, jumped on anyone or done anything except play and crack us up about every other minute......he is soooo goofy and funny!! Oh, I also gave him a bath and blowdry, and sat there perfectly. So my question to all of you is....."IS this the REAL him???" He is only 3 months old, but sooo smart, sweet and mature!!! Or, do they have a tendancy to change when they are fully in their new environment? If anyone has had a similiar experience, please let me know!!! THanks, will post pics soon!!!

You could be really lucky but dogs in a new environment often don't show their true colors. The first few nights may be peaceful but as soon as they become accustomed to their surroundings they act totally different. The potty training goes out the window, simple commands forgotten, whining and barking at bedtime... Our dog Sassy, who is a biter whenever anyone does anything to her, sat quietly and let us shave her matted coat on her first night here. A few days later the same thing required a muzzle.

If you happen to have that one in a million dog, count your blessings :-) We'll keep our fingers crossed for you!
So what have you named your baby boy?

Like Nita says, it probably isn't "really him". He's probably a bit shocked from all that has occurred, probably a little exhausted, and maybe a bit on his best behavior. The rascal in him will come out soon enough! I suspect sheepy puppies start this way so that when they do turn into a holy terror, we recall the good in them (we've witnessed it, you see)and forgive them almost anything!!!
Sure sounds like you've gotten lucky but then like others say it could be all an act. I have never had that pleasure, for some reason they let us see the real them from the beginning.
Tiggy was like that when I brought her home. Not a peep from her in the car. No mischief at home although we did have a piddle puddle by morning.

Walked nicely for me, sat, let me brush her etc. I forget how long it lasted but I know she heeled perfectly for me for about 2 months, I thought I had hit the jackpot, now she likes to rush ahead when she smells an interesting smell or suspects a cat might be lurking up ahead :excited: She did turn into a wild and crazy girl but totally lovable. :hearts:

She's calming down again now at nearly 3 years old.
My Daisey was like that all her 13 years...never a problem. I think once she chewed on a chair leg..that was it. She was always calm, never wanted to leave the house...we had 3 acres and she never left the yard and was off leash...walked property line and then returned to the porch. She truly was the best dog we've ever had...never jumped up, barked except at 5 pm once for her dinner, never went potty in the house, just a sweetie...reading everyones experience I think she must have had a tyroid problem as she didn't like running or going for long walks either. She had the sweetest wigglebum though and would play with my daughter hide and seek. Hopefully you will be lucky but it really could be the puppy was medicated before trip, scared and is still scared. It may take a few weeks to see the real personality. Congrats...I think most OES's are a true treasure and you are blessed to get to share a life with your sweet puppy.

:aww: she sounds like the sweetest!!!
Maybe this is the real him, but you still have the teen years ahead...my money says something "interesting" will come up.

Of course in the last three years I've dealt with two years of EVIL puppy (ate walls) and when he finally settled in came CRAZYRUDY (rescue...baggage keeps arriving...we're very close to the one year mark with him). It's entirely possible I'm just so bitter and jealous of your good dog that I'm trying to rain on your parade.

Enjoy your new addition, and we need to see lots of pictures... :D
I'm feeling guilty not mentioning our first OES Callie...we rescued her at 2 and she was a wonderful old soul as well...she was more clingy to me but I think it was because I rescued her and had her alone for the first week. She also never went potty in the house, loved children, and was just wonderful...unfortunately at 8 she died from a sudden intestinal problem...she had pulled through but had a blood clot kill her before she fully recovered. My husband got Daisey exactly a week later recommended by the vet that took care of Callie...our daughters were in middle school and so devastated that they wouldn't eat and just sat around holding Callie's toys...he couldn't take it..so I had two wonderful low-key loving OES's who were just the easiest to take care...my two tibetans are similar but more needy...they have to be told once an hour I love them:) They also cried till wet all over their body when they were younger and I had to leave them...they are still very child like and Rosie is almost 11. I love both breeds but I have to say my OES experience tells me that OES's were far easier to train and live with...my husband who never wanted a dog has a soft spot now for OES's. Once my grandaughters are older and ready for a bigger dog I have a feeling we will have another OES...right now the two tibetan's and two young grandaughters are a handful. Just had to give Callie her due...I felt she was looking down on me waiting for her praise.
lol, i have had my new sheepie for 2 weeks now and she has really settled in!!! the first couple of nights, not a peep, no accidents total angel. then things changed, the back door wide open she pees on the floor by the step!! i have to put everything away or she will chew, she owns the sofa, has started to chase cars (on the lead so no real danger) and seems to have lost her hearing 8O

i knew it would happen and glad it only took a couple of days, the tension was killing me. yes, its lovely having a perfect puppy but where is the fun in that? a pup with personality is more interesting and already the night accidents have stopped again.

congrats on your sheepie and let the fun begin :clappurple:
I named him Julius. AND............he is STILL an angel!!! I can't believe it??? He is now 4 months old and is taking classes to be a therapy dog. He is sooo smart, gentle and loving. My vet said that I have a "once in a lifetime dog" and to enjoy it! I know that this is a wonderful breed but I also feel that I lucked out a bit more than some others. Def hooked on OES' for life!

That's great to hear.
If he impressed your vet that much he's obviously a star.
He Sounds a bit like Archie.

At Night unless something like a Fox or one of our cats didturb him not a peep.

In the three years we have had him only two accidents of a toilet kind.

And he only ever chewed one draw knob in the kitchen.

When it's play time he has a wail of a time and is really bouncey and fun, really enjoys his walks, loves the car, but when it's time to behave it's like he knows.

If Julius hates his legs being groomed - then they could well be kindred spirits! :D
I adopted Violet from a Rescue at the age of 9 mts. Violet didn't bark for over a year. I thought it was odd that she didn't bark. (kinda thankful too) Anyway, she did start to bark and has been barking ever since. She doesn't bark too often, the Aussies take care of that chore for her, but she does bark when Daddy comes home or if we head out to the Van. Yes, she does love to use that high pitched sheepie bark as well. Enjoy the quiet while you can. 8)
Ryleigh was/has been a Tasmanian Devil since day one. :excited: :excited: First day we brought her home (after she had been kept in backyard for 7 months with no one to play with) she was crazy, running everywhere, driving my 2 labs crazy,etc... 6 months later things havent changed any!! And we love her for it. :hearts: :hearts:

maybe you should send a note to his breeders telling them how great he is, so they know their mom and dad are a good match. :cheer:
We picked up Dahlia on Friday from the same breeder as the OP. I realize it is only a few days, but, boy...she is good....I am shocked!

They flew her from Iowa to Michigan for us and we picked her up there. We drove a few hrs from Michigan heading home and then stayed the night and drove the rest of the way Saturday. She loves her crate. She sleeps in there in the car and in the house. She hasn't had any accidents and she sleeps through the night. She just about has mastered the tinkle bells by the door. She is learning sit and come and so far, she is really getting it. She is only 8 weeks old so she is doing well. She just wants to learn and is very curious.

The vet was actually shocked yesterday to her behavior. She just walked in, sat down, got checked and then laid there. She was very calm and mellow.

Then, we took her to a puppy playgroup----same thing, she observed, played a little, but, mostly just sat there taking it all in.

Now, she does have that instinctual puppy/sheepie nip at the feet.... but, with redirection, we are trying to keep it under control from the beginning since I know that it can only get worse.
Shari,
I sent you a message and just re-read your post..................so you did get Dahlia from John. FYI, he breeds angels!!! You are in for a wonderful dog!!! Congrats!!! We should get together some day.............I live in PA!!!

Congads on your new pups! Sounds like you got from the same breeder and maybe got siblings? You two should get together and ahve the babies "re-meet" someday!

Both my dogs when coming home as pups, did very well with housebreaking and sleeping through the night. I think the breed is "better" at housebreaking than some others.

Glad to hear the pups are nice and calm...I might caution you to enjoy it now...Eventually the will reach the "crazy dog" stage where they run around at about 8 pm like mad dogs then drop from exhaustion

Looking forward to hearing about them as they grow! And they will grow FAST!!! :)
